Starbuck Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Might that be because I only set it to scan my hard drive not mums therefore the custom scan? Ar right understood. I assumed you would have run a full scan on everything while you was at it. But as you say, because you only scanned your hard drive it would treat it like any other external drive and would give those 'disables'. My fault for assuming! Quote Member of:UNITE

KenB Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 We need to run a check on your hard drive. With it connected to your mum's computer check which letter is allocated to the drive. Assuming mum's OS is XP Assuming your drive is Z:\ ( which it isn't !! ) Start > Run .....type in ....cmd .............ENTER At the command prompt type in .......chkdsk z: /f/r Note the spaces before and after z: ( substitute the drive letter for your drive for z: ) Hit ENTER This will look at the drive condition and attempt to repair if anything is found. It will also look for bad sectors and try to retrieve any info it can This will take some time to complete. babyhornetdan Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 Ok then. Thanks. Its completed the disk check and has corrected several things and fixed others. Quote
KenB Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Here's hoping ................... Put the drive back in the bracket and install it in your laptop. Try booting up again. babyhornetdan Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 It is now saying that windows failed to start and to use the installation disk which I don't have. Â It also says File: \boot\memtest.exe, Status: 0xc000000e Info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. Quote
KenB Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Not looking good. Try this: Note - all data /files / photos will be lost. all installed programs will be lost. Attempt to boot up - constantly tap F8 about once per second. You will be taken to the Advanced Startup Options. (you may have to try a few times to get the timing of F8 right )  Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate the menu. Select "Repair Your Computer" ( hopefully this will be available)  Select your language and keyboard; click "Next."  Select your Windows user name from the drop-down menu. Enter your password if required. (leave blank if you don't have one) Click "OK." This will begin the "System Recovery Options" menu. Startup Repair System Restore Windows Complete PC Restore Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool Command Prompt Toshiba Recovery Wizard Try Startup Repair first. If this works for you then your data etc should be OK. If it doesn't then ...... Select the Toshiba Recovery Wizard and follow the onscreen instructions. The Toshiba Recovery Wizard will delete all existing data on the hard drive and reinstall Windows.   Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!  MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
babyhornetdan Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 I have tried it a few times but it's now saying that \windows\system32\winload.exe it won't load the recovery window or anything. Quote
KenB Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Can you get to the Advanced Options by tapping F8 ? If you tap F12 when initially switching on - does that take you to a recovery console ? EDIT: ( Ignore F12 - I think the solution lies with my post below ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!  MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
KenB Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Found this that may be useful. http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD7C02140000R01.htm Switch off > then hold down the Zero ( 0 ) key. Keep this help down and switch on. Keep the zero help down until something happens. Hopefully you will see this:  Do You ? babyhornetdan Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 No I get none of them. What ever I do I get a black screen which calls itself windows boot manager telling me windows failed to start. And to insert the instalation disk and repair it from that. And it says that \windows\system32\winload.exe is missing or corrupt so cannot be loaded Quote
KenB Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 It is getting to the point where it wants to load Windows. Before it gets to this point we should be able to get to the recovery console. (If it exists) Try this again please: Switch off > then hold down the Zero ( 0 ) key. Keep this help down and switch on. Keep the zero help down until something happens. What happens when you do this? =================== Another option: On your mum's laptop ....... Start > All Programs Is "Recovery Disk Creator" or similar available? or try.... Start, All Programs, Maintenance, Create a Recovery Disc. If your mum has not created her Recovery Disks yet - it should be there. ==================== Give Toshiba a ring and ask about recovery disks for your machine Phone 0844 847 8944 ==================== We could try copying your mum's winload.exe file and replacing yours with the copy. This is easily done. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!  MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

Just comes with the same black screen. I will try look at mums for the create recovery disk but it was not on mine. I will ring toshiba in the morning and see if I can get a disk. I am happy to try the copy later. I will be out till about 9 though, but will be free the rest of the night. Quote
KenB Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 I am happy to try the copy later.  we can try this later. I will write the instructions to save a bit of time :) Assuming that your mum's OS is the same as your own. ( I think you said it was earlier ) Take the non-working hard drive out and put it in the enclosure again. Connect the enclosure up to your mum's machine. Click on Start > Computer > X:\ > Windows > System32 ......................( where X = the drive letter of your hard drive ) Scroll down to winload.exe Right click on this > Rename make it winloadold.exe Now go back to C:\ ( this is your mum's hard drive ) Click on C:\ > Windows > System32 Scroll down to winload.exe > right click on this > Copy Go back to your drive > Windows > System32 Scroll down past the folders > right click > Paste Put the drive back in the problem computer and try booting. babyhornetdan Posted January 12, 2012 Author Posted January 12, 2012 I have tried that, but no luck. It s saying the same thing. I will call toshiba and see if I can get an instalation cd sent out, if not is it possible to create your own?? Quote
KenB Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 is it possible to create your own?? That's what I was hoping to do from your mum's laptop. There is no guarantee that this would work - but it would be worth a try. Another option: On your mum's laptop ....... Start > All Programs Is "Recovery Disk Creator" or similar available? or try....
