Guest Pheasant Plucker® Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Hi there, Has the behaviour of creating users when installing XP changed somewhere along the line? I mean *I think* when installing XP some time ago I used to setup without first creating a user - everything was under Administrator but the last few times when installing XP I was unable to proceed without first creating a user other than one called Administrator...or am I going mad? ;^) Secondly, and probably connected to the above I now have a selection of computers on my home network with various user names, Administrator, Admin, my own name etc. and it is getting more than a little confusing when I want to access a machine over the network having to remember the correct user name. So...I would like to standardize the user name across all machines as my own name but do not want to lose any settings, preferences, mailbox etc. etc. or go through a prolonged setting up procedure etc. Is there an easy way to create a new user (or modify the main user) but keep *ALL* of the main users profile to include the aforementioned settings, preferences, mailbox, program access, rights, etc. etc. I've noticed before when I have just changed users names some of the folders seem to retain the original username and I would like the new username to be reflected throughout the PC. Possible? -- Thanks & regards, -=pp=-

Guest Pheasant Plucker® Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Re: User questions? I only ever install from a Microsoft CD but the later ones have had SP2 'on board' where obviously the earlier ones didn't. Guest Kelly Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Re: User questions? Hi, I use several MS-XP cd's (different versions/formats); however, all require a user name - the Admin account is hidden by default. Only OEM version's auto add a user name (Owner....). -- All the Best, Kelly (MS-MVP/DTS&XP) Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm SupportSpace http://www.supportspace.com/pages?aiu=kellyskorner "Pheasant Plucker®" <pheasant@plucker.not> wrote in message news:eDvb24IBJHA.2032@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > I only ever install from a Microsoft CD but the later ones have had SP2 > 'on board' where obviously the earlier ones didn't. > > Regards, > -=pp=- > > "Kelly" <kelly@kelly.com> wrote in message > news:O2v3Ig7AJHA.3400@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... >> ...Create user >> >> Depends on which version/source (for a better term) of XP you are >> installing from. >> >> -- >> >> All the Best, >> Kelly (MS-MVP/DTS&XP) >> >> Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! >> http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm >> >> SupportSpace >> http://www.supportspace.com/pages?aiu=kellyskorner >> >> "Pheasant Plucker®" <pheasant@plucker.not> wrote in message >> news:uxG9zC4AJHA.2056@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... >>> Hi there, >>> >>> Has the behaviour of creating users when installing XP changed somewhere >>> along the line? >>> >>> I mean *I think* when installing XP some time ago I used to setup >>> without first creating a user - everything was under Administrator but >>> the last few times when installing XP I was unable to proceed without >>> first creating a user other than one called Administrator...or am I >>> going mad? ;^) >>> >>> Secondly, and probably connected to the above I now have a selection of >>> computers on my home network with various user names, Administrator, >>> Admin, my own name etc. and it is getting more than a little confusing >>> when I want to access a machine over the network having to remember the >>> correct user name. >>> >>> So...I would like to standardize the user name across all machines as my >>> own name but do not want to lose any settings, preferences, mailbox etc. >>> etc. or go through a prolonged setting up procedure etc. >>> >>> Is there an easy way to create a new user (or modify the main user) but >>> keep *ALL* of the main users profile to include the aforementioned >>> settings, preferences, mailbox, program access, rights, etc. etc. >>> >>> I've noticed before when I have just changed users names some of the >>> folders seem to retain the original username and I would like the new >>> username to be reflected throughout the PC. >>> >>> Possible? >>> >>> -- >>> Thanks & regards, >>> -=pp=- >>> >> > >
