Guest Spiral Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Little survey here--and if you have fast times, please mention your mobo and processor. I get 22 seconds on a six-year old Intel PBZ with a P4 3.0, Raid 0. A networked, but stripped down XP (minimal services except for virus). I think that's good but I'm sure newer machines will beat it easily... interested to hear yours--no cheating! (shopping for a mobo)

(shopping for a mobo) DFI KT-600AL mb w/AMD 3000+ 1 gig RAM 7200 rpm drives. Boots in 15 seconds, and that's with PageDefrag running on boot also (with no delay set). While that gives me a Desktop, it takes about another 15-20 seconds before everything is loaded and I can quickly move about. I work on quite a few client machines each week and I feel like this old workstation is quicker than most Dell Intel duo-core machines. Hard to compare apples to apples, but response time doing normal tasks is still quick on this workstation. -- Terry R. ***Reply Note*** Anti-spam measures are included in my email address. I guess I should have said, until you have a cursor arrow over the start button, or, no hour glass, which to me is the indication of when it is fully booted. As I build different machines, I'm getting that same vibe you got--that CPU increases are not increases en masse, but at certain tasks, keeping the old ones decently in the running... Cheers

(shopping for a mobo) Getting to the point where a machine can boot so fast requires stripping down to the point where all one has is an operating system. I have never seen much point in doing this. You can in fact strip excessively, I agree, but I run the entire Adobe suite, Photoshop & Premiere, Illustrator, etc., use a video capture PCI card, messes o' fonts, Dreamweaver and web everything. Also, the wonderful DVD Flick (gotta plug this open source app!), which takes AVI files and cooks them into a DVD while keeping a/v in synch. (that's where I'd like to retire the ol' P4 into something quad-like). In addition, I use Cerebrus as an FTP server to mozy huge files back and forth on the network plus SLING the TV on it in a TV window (olympics). Trying to make a case for it's usability! I think everything works smoother when you pimp-slap some of the services from XP... Was hoping to hear about some insane boot times from quad-core people...

You may have system booting at a fast speed but it may not take long, you even failed to mention any security programs in your system if here is any, which others says cause a lot baggage. -- Rey "Spiral" wrote: > Mike Hall - MVP wrote: > > > "Spiral" <spiral@spongy.com> wrote in message > > news:hZ-dndgQ89hOSTDVnZ2dnUVZ_sninZ2d@supernews.com... > >> Little survey here--and if you have fast times, please mention your mobo > >> and > >> processor.
