I have two computers, running XP Pro and Home respectively. They've both had

recent reinstalls, and both display folder contents as icons. How can I

reset them to dispay lists?

RE: resetting folder view

open windows explorer select view choose list, if you want this a default

view all the time, after you have chosen lists, go to tools, folder options

and then select apply to all folders, then ok

That doesn't work, because "apply to all folders" is greyed out, on both

systems.

I had previously thought that preceding this drill with "Reset All Folders"

might have the effect of giving me back control, but it doesn't. All it does

it undo all the individual settings I've made in folders and send me back to

icons everywhere.

Maddening.

Open and instance of Windows Explorer, set the view to List, hold down the

Ctrl key, close the window by clicking the close button at the top right (red

X). It should remember the last setting the next time windows explorer is

opened.

Thank you, that's a useful dodge, but I still don't have access to the

Folder Options setting. I've never understood it. The View panel in Folder

Options says "you can apply the view [such as Details or Tiles] that you are

using for this folder to all folders". But what does it mean by "this

folder"?

And how can I "Apply to all folders" if that option is greyed out?

RE: resetting folder view

fromThats because you are accessing the Folder Options from the Control Panel

and a folder is not selected, so there is no folder settings to apply to all

folders. To apply the folder setting to all folders:

1. Open an instance of Windows Explorer

2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options

3. On the View tab click Apply to all folders.

The present settings made on the folder currently open, that is file view,

window size, window position will be copied to all folders.
