As the title says this is about typing tutorial programs, as such there are quite a few free programs available.

As part of the self learning and the program monitoring the learners progress, they quite often include a keylogger as part of the way the program picks up on keying mistakes. I know from experience that most anti-virus and anti-malware programs will pick up on the fact that a keylogger is present.

First does that keylogger pose a security risk by the fact it is there?

Secondly, if no security risk, is it safe to tell your anti-virus to ignore that keylogger?

An interesting question no doubt, but people who wish to learn to type quickly and make better use of their keyboard, will find any answers useful.

Really good question Nev. A reputable typing tutor program can be ignored. Now, I wouldn't be running it in the background, I'd only launch it, use it, then close it when I'm done. The logger should only start when the program is running. So, yes, you can tell it to ignore it. The other key thing is that you're only typing what it tells you to. So, you're mimicking it. The value in keyloggers is recording keystrokes for passwords, credit card numbers and user names. Given that you aren't typing sensitive information, you're fine. THat being said...I wouldn't be downloading ANY typing tutor program and definitely not from a torrent since that is a neat way to sneak a trojan virus/keylogger onto a computer by posing as a legit false positive program.

Thanks for that etavares, and the warning about the download and where from.

I will add, If from a reputable download site or "Mirror" may be the safest for the free programs.

If a paid for program, I would be seeking an outlet where the disk can be bought. Also it would be wise to seek out information regarding reputation of any maker or distributor of such a program.
