How do I upgrade?

First of all, Norma, do all of us and yourself a favor by answering some

questions:

 

1. Do I want or need to upgrade and why?

 

2. Do I really need an upgrade or do I want a new machine with new hardware

so I can run cool new games, run Itunes and other stuff?

 

Suggestions:Why not just keep your old Windows 98 machine and if you don't

want it then donate it and or recycle it because I think Norma you are the

user who wants to run the latest stuff.

 

3. Do you want someone like Falcon Northwest, Dell, Toshiba, etc. to build

your machine, or do you want to build it or a friend ie. system engineer to

help you build it, etc.

 

Please correct me if I am wrong and tell us what you really want and what

you really want to do because it sounds like a new machine may indeed be

right for you but of course you may not want to deal with the associated

trial-ware and ad-ware on a new machine and a clean Microsoft os install is

always best I have found.

To upgrade, you must buy at retail (specialist store or eBay) WinXP

system disks. There are both upgrade and OEM (new installation)

varieties. It would be convenient but unnecessary to buy disks with

Service Packs 1 or 2, because once connected you can use MS

Update to upload and instal these. (But be wary of SP3, which

prompted many trouble reports, perhaps for software or hardware

you do not use.)

 

Dan's advice is cogent. Specify beforehand what you want to do that

your current hardware and software do not allow.

 

If you can find a reliable source, it may be cheaper to buy used. My

wife's generally admirable XP cost $125 including 22" monitor, in

good running order -- now networked (wireless) with the Win98SE

PC I prefer.

How do I upgrade?

 

I want to upgrade my current version of Windows 98 to XP. I don't want to

go near Vista...I've heard too many bad things about it.

 

I've searched Microsoft's site and just can not find where a 98 user can

upgrade to XP. Everything is geared to upgrading to Vista.

Only after you provide us with a rundown on your hardware. CPU speed, amount

of RAM, (which you can determine by right-clicking My Computer and then

clicking Properties.) Also, make & model if it's a name-grand machine. That

is usually displayed on the outside of the box somewhere.

You can also dual boot and have both Win98 and XP, if you have the

drive space. Or, if you are not sure you really want XP, just remove

your harddrive, get another cheap harddrive and install XP on the new

harddrive. This way you can always go back to 98.

 

I installed XP on a spare h-drive. I did not care for it. I just

plugged my Win98 drive back in and lost nothing.

If you're used to Win98SE (like I was, and still am), it takes a bit of

reconfiguring to get XP the way you like it - but once you do, it's not all

that much different.

 

Well, with one or two big exceptions:

 

1) WinXP is MUCH more robust (i.e., rarely, if ever, crashes, or gets blue

screens),

and

2) you can run the more recent software on it, that you can't run or even

install on Win98SE.

Bill, I agree with number 2 in your statement but I disagree with number 1

because having a dual-boot with Windows 98 Second Edition on one hard drive

and XP Professional -- fully updated on the other drive allows for the

external security of XP with the internal safety of 98 Second Edition.

Remember, in September 2007 when my home computer was hacked from the

compromised APS intranet and the hacker(s) took everything from the XP side

but when they went after the 98 Second Edition side all the hacker(s) could

do was make VPN crash and did not damage the machine. This is why I am such

a pest and I agree fully with Chris Quirke, mvp on this and that is to have

Microsoft have 2 lines of source code again and the source code should not be

9x or NT but something new and different that combines the best of both

worlds so that the consumer is fully satisfied and the business is fully

satisfied and if it is not possible with one source code then just use 2 or

even 3 and market your operating systems according at least that is my

opinion if I ever have a say in what Microsoft would do. <grin>
