Guest smicale Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I have a XP machine when it reboots the explorer.exe file will not run. If I go to task manager and browse to the file in the windows directory it is there, but if i try and run it I get the error message saying, "Windows cannot find 'C:\windows\explorer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search." This system was hot with a virus, but I think I have removed them all. I also ran a registry cleaner and it found 187 errors and fixed that as well. I think there still is something wrong in the registry and that is why explorer will not run. Anyone have any ideas?

If the virus didn't destroy your Windows installation (and it certainly sounds like it did), running the registry cleaner finished the job. See this link for why not to use registry cleaners: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 You might try a Repair Install, but based on your post I wouldn't suggest doing anything except backing up your data if you forgot to do so before (and you can retrieve data without booting into Windows) and doing a Clean Install. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm - Repair Install How-To http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows - What you will need on-hand Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! Apparently the horror of going off a cliff has caused you to think you are an MS-MVP when you aren't. Nor should anyone download files from a website which hosts pr0n. Guest db.·.. > Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Re: XP Explorer.exe will not start you can go into safemode and try a system restore. ------------- virus's are not always the cause of dysfunction, but it is due to a lack of maintenance and bad hardware or bad advice from manipulative mvp's. however, microsoft software engineers think otherwise: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/article/registry_cleaner_why.htm something to keep in mind is that if you were infected by a virus and it was successfully removed, then it likely also corrupted a number of system files which require replacing with genuine ones from your win cd. the method above is known as "windows repair installation": http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx btw: you can try that explorer fix mentioned to you by pcbutts. if it works, then great. if not then your explorer crash was not a typical one and you can proceed with the instructions above. -- db·´¯`·...¸><)))º> "smicale" <smicale@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:66696DB7-99D7-4659-9637-6C643D6C2639@microsoft.com... >I have a XP machine when it reboots the explorer.exe file will not run.
