Guest Angel Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I have a question: Is Windows ME the same as Windows 2000? The reason I am asking is because my printer is not what it used to be. I can not load it with paper, it jams or all pages go through almost all at once. I have to feed it one page at a time. I bought the printer, 10/30/2000. It is a Lexmark Z51. I was looking at a new printer and the requirements were for one, Windows 2000 or later. I am still using my computer which is a Windows 98SE, bought 6/1/2000. Angel

Guest Bill in Co. Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Re: Windows 2000 vs Windows ME It's getting harder to find a printer for Win98. However, some may still have Win98 drivers for it. I don't know if they make parallel port printers anymore (for the Win98SE computers), but you can always consider getting a USB printer, as long as it has Win98SE capability, but even that is limited now. > Angel wrote: >> I have a question: Is Windows ME the same as Windows 2000? OK. Or she could probably broaden her choices a bit more by considering some USB printers, but even those are somewhat hard to find (as to being Win98SE compatible) But I know at least some still have Win98SE drivers (but most likely in the older series, and not the newest ones coming out).

I have been looking around for one that will work with this OS. I have not found one yet. Wish me luck on finding one. When classes start on Monday, this old printer will get a work out. Guest letterman@invalid.com Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Re: Windows 2000 vs Windows ME There are probably a lot of brand new older printers still available. Check some online auctions. I'd avoid Lexmark in the future. They have a bad reputation and are the most expensive printer for ink. I bought a used Canon Laser printer and it works well. Although it tends to pull several sheets of paper at once too. I think all printers do that at least once and awhile. Part of it might be the paper too. I was told that a computer that runs WinME can also run Win2000. I never tried it though. My computer came with Win2000, but I still prefer 98, so I changed it. Guest Dan Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Re: Windows 2000 vs Windows ME Bill, sometimes the Windows ME driver works --- does for me with ATI Radeon 9800 XT and the Windows 2000 driver for my HP Printer after HP removed all the 98 drivers for it from there website so 98 users do have options if they are smart enough to use them --- grin. I certainly would not trust any Windows XP drivers on 98 Second Edition because they are too far apart. Well, 98 Second Edition users have until at least 2010 before Windows 2000 Professional users are supposed to be left high and dry after end of support for 2000 Professional and that will be a sad day, imo. My laser printer is a Canon and works well. I still have my old 24 pin dot matrix printer from the 90's and it still works. Another brand I'd avoid is HP. However, I am not basing that on any experience with their printers, but on their digital cameras. I got a HP digital camera and it was the worst piece of junk I ever owned. The photo quality was horrid, and I needed to replace the batteries after every 8 to 12 pictures (less if I used the flash). HP never even returned my email. Luckily the store exchanged it for another brand. I wont buy any HP product again. >"letterman@invalid.com" wrote: > >> There are probably a lot of brand new older printers still available. >> Check some online auctions. Because I do not want to waste a lot of paper, I only feed it one page at a time now. I thought that when it did that the first time, it did something to the printer. I have tried different papers. and it did the same thing even though it was not as much paper as the first time. : I was told that a computer that runs WinME can also run Win2000. I : never tried it though. My computer came with Win2000, but I still : prefer 98, so I changed it. : I am still waiting for the ME that I was promised over a year ago. I never worked with WinME. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Re: Windows 2000 vs Windows ME Your information is woefully wrong. There is nothing about ME that makes it the least bit similar to Win2000 when it comes to hardware. And when it comes to HP printers, my experience (including the experience of my clients) is that they are generally more dependable than most. As for your problem with the camera, after reading your posts over the last several weeks, my guess would be that it was purely a user error -- you bought the cheapest camera you could find and then wondered why it turned out to be a POS. It's a measure of your intelligence (or rather, lack thereof) that you think this was HP's fault. -- Gary S. Guest Jeff Richards Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Re: Windows 2000 vs Windows ME This is a common fault for printers and is easily fixed. In fact, the manufacturer probably has a kit with user-installation instructions available - certainly HP used to have them. It involves replacing a small soft pad that is used to apply pressure to the sheets for gripping. Because it's a soft pad, it goes soggy after years of use. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Angel" <angel@noway.com> wrote in message news:%236tCs7fBJHA.4724@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > > <snip< > : > My printer does it most of the time. Guest Angel Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Re: Windows 2000 vs Windows ME Hi Gary, Did not have any luck with getting the computer. He still has not taken his files off it as yet. I spoke to him last night on the way to the Homeopathic Group Meeting. It has been 2 years this coming January that it was promised. I reminded him of that. For now, that computer is out.
