System Restore not working in Cloned HD - can't find sr.sys file on SP2 CD

Recommended Posts

Replaced (cloned) my HD, booted up (almost) first try. Everything seems to

work except SR is not working. I reviewed several of the posts on this

subject, and they suggest a couple of methods of rebuilding the sr file that

require you to insert the SP2 CD. I believe they are looking for the sr.sys

file.

I do have the Windows SP2 disc, however, I keep getting the error message

"file not found"

Agent Ransack can't find sr.sys on the CD either.

What to do?

You probably need to do a Windows Repair Install (not a reinstall of SP2).

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

sr.sys ought to be in %WINDIR%\system32\drivers. A copy should also be

in %WINDIR%\ServicePackFiles\i386 and possibly an older copy in

%WINDIR%\$NtServicePackUninstal$.

If you really want to get it from the Windows XP install CD, you need to

search for "sr.sy_" (without the quotes). You'll then need to use the

"Expand" command in order to uncompress it and copy it to the desired

location.

Ditto, the same thing happened to me recently when I cloned my new HD,my

solution was to format the new HD and clone it again...it worked just fine.

Re: System Restore not working in Cloned HD - can't find sr.sys file on SP2 CD

Thank you Lem

and thank you Mike, I just can't make myself reclone the whole thing, I'll

see if I can get into bigger trouble first :-)

OK Lem, bear with me - I'm very close to being in over my head here -

Anyway, I found sr.sy_ and got it expanded. However, the expanded version

came out with the same name - I was expecting something like sr.sys What

do I do with the expanded sr.sy_ ?

BTW - I forgot to mention, on boot I get a black screen which asks which

operating system do I want - "Windows (default)" or "Windows (default)"

This screen brings back memories, but not how to get rid of it. Any

suggestions?

Thanks again all -

Dave

Re: System Restore not working in Cloned HD - can't find sr.sys fileon SP2 CD

Just rename the expanded file to the proper name.

As to the other problem, it sounds as if you didn't clone the disk

properly and now have two copies of Windows on the same disk. I'm

sorry, but I don't have time today to deal with the several

possibilities that might be behind this. If System Restore doesn't

help, and you don't want to do a Windows Repair Install as I suggested

previously, I suggest that you start a new thread about this new topic.
