i, folks

Hope someone can help with a question I have.

I have just bought a PC which requires a modem (wifi not needed as it's fixed) but would be

grateful for any suggestions as to which modem would be suitable for Windows 7 Home Premium.

The one I have doesn't work. (Thomson speedtouch 330 given by Talktalk years ago)

As I said I don't need wireless so a wired modem would do but not averse to a wireless one if it's a good option but not looking to spend too much.

Does need to be very easy to set-up given my lack of experience.

Many thanks.

Hi and welcome to ExTS

Thomson speedtouch 330

That is going back a few years !

Do you have broadband connection now?

If so - how are you connecting?

Are you still with TalkTalk ? If so - they will supply you with a router free of charge if you talk to them nicely :)

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Thanks for the welcome KenB

I'm using an old PC running XP but the 330 won't work on the new Asus I've bought with W7 and it seems there's no way to update it hence the need for a new one.

My experience of talktalk is that they're cheap but not very efficient and to be honest talking to them on the phone can be very frustrating and stressful. Having said that I'll give it a go but if you know of one worth buying please let me know anyway.

Best wishes.

I'm with TalkTalk and just got a free D-Link Wireless + Wired router off them for free.

0800 049 7843

Give this number a call. Explain that you are using an old modem ( not a router ) that was supplied by them and you are now having problems.

You have been told that they are supplying new AND existing customers with a new router.

Ask if they could do the same for you.

I used the 0800 number and the lady I spoke to sounded almost local to me.

They are available until 8-00pm

Let me know what they say.

Hi KenB

Have rung the number you gave me and they have referred me to customer services on 08700 878 038 so I'll give them a try tomorrow.

That number was for new sales so as an existing customer they couldn't supply me with one apparently!

I'll let you know what they say but I'm not confident!!

Cheers. C

Strangely - that was the number I used and they spoke to me.

Perhaps it was because I was renewing my subscription :)

Well the guy I spoke to was very pleasant but couldn't help as I was not a new customer.

Suspect I'm going to have to buy one so back to my question I guess.

Take a look here:

You don't need an expensive one. Make sure you read the reviews.

hi, KenB

I've looked at some of these but reading the reviews can be a mistake as you get as many positives as negatives and you end up just as unsure as when you started. Also on one or two sites the set-up was described as not so easy unless you had experience.

Still assume these will all work with W7?

Hi,

The routers are not Operating System specific.

I take your point re. reviews - generally people who have a bad experience tend to write them. You have to filter these and look for a good average.

If it is any help I recently bought this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TD-W8961ND-300Mbps-Wireless-Router/dp/B004ERXXHC/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1326360435&sr=8-7

This has a modem too ( most are ) and has wireless and wired (ethernet) capability.

Hi, KenB

That's the very product I was going to buy but read a report that it wasn't easy to set up.

Assuming it works with W7 I'll go ahead and buy it as you are clearly happy with it.

Why 'though if they aren't OS specific won't my Speedtouch work apparently, I understand, because there are no drivers for it for W7?

KenB,

Just to confirm that I've ordered the one you mentioned TD-W8961ND so if I have any problem

getting it up and running I might seek your advice if you don't mind?

Best wishes,

That's what we are here for.

The installation was very easy - prompted from the CD.
