Guest Walter Cohen Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 I bought an Acer laptop that came with Vista and I am upgrading (downgrading) the OS to XP Pro. After wiping the hard drive and installing XP, the XP setup went through just about everything and failed with an error of "Setup can't load internet connection wizard" to which I replied OK. It then finished the setup and, upon first reboot, came back with another message : "File download - Do you want to open or save this file?" for the file msobshel.htm from C:\Windows\system32\oobe. I choose open (for some reason) and it brought up the dialog box on what program to open the file with. I just cancelled it out. Anyway, after rebooting the laptop again XP 'seems' ok but I am unable to setup an internet connection which should be able to pick up my wireless internet at home. Any thoughts on any of the above two error messages (why did I get them) and what I should be doing? Can I do a repair of XP - would that help? Thanks, Walter

Why not do it manually? -- thecreator "Walter Cohen" <w_cohen@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:OHC7ZXfBJHA.528@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... >I bought an Acer laptop that came with Vista and I am upgrading >(downgrading) the OS to XP Pro. > After wiping the hard drive and installing XP, the XP setup went through > just about everything and failed with an error of "Setup can't load > internet connection wizard" to which I replied OK. Did you install all the necessary XP drivers for this Acer laptop? How do you connect to the Internet? Broadband or dial-up? What is the model and model number? I just did the same exact thing last night! It's my sister-in-law's Acer Aspire 5100-3357. If you don't know about them, here are some useful links: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/

Guest Walter Cohen Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Re: Errors during XP Pro setup on laptop I don't necessarily need the wizard but it's those two setup errors that has me concerned. The wording of the first error message must be off because when I Googled it, all I got was your post! Please give us the exact verbatim message. Also, using the very detailed step-by-step instructions on this Web page: http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/sp2installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm please tell us at exactly which point you received that message. Is this XP Pro disk retail, branded OEM, or generic OEM? Did you format the drive using FAT32 or NTFS?
