graisbeck Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Hi, my friend has a RM AL51 4100 Notebook and it is running XP Pro SP2. The problem is that it can't connect to the internet. It has a D-Link AirPlus DWL-G650 wireless adapter in the card port, but when trying to open IE7 or FF it will not connect to the internet. When I run>cmd>ipconfig it shows the ip address as zeros. Also the wireless LED does not light up. If the router is not wireless enabled then you will not be able to connect to anything - not even the router. Try unplugging it from the mains - leave for 30 seconds - plug it in again. The wireless LED must be on if you are to be able to connect wirelessly. can you connect if you use an ethernet cable direct to the router ? Sorry, I should of said the wireless LED on the laptop is not lit but the routers is. I can connect via ethernet cable. The D-Link wireless adapter is telling me that it is trying to acquire an IP address. I can connect wirelessly to the router and internet with my own laptop. When you said "Wireless LED does not light up" were you referring to the device itself? Do the LEDs light up on the device ? The "Act" and "Link" lights on the dlink device do flash on and off simultaneously, which I'm taking as it is connected. The tray icon for wireless connections shows as having a good connection, but the browser still won't open any web pages. The wireless LED situated at the front of the laptop does not light up. I have also tried a NEWlink wireless usb adapter which also did not work. Quote

I've now removed the card and plugged in a usb adapter which has the latest driver but still won't connect. Tray icon says it's trying to acquire an IP address. When I right click the wireless connection tray icon and go to status, it reads: Status: Trying to acquire IP address Speed: 10mb Activity: sent:0 received: 120 Hope that helps :) Quote

When you press the wireless on/off switch - does that light up the switch to indicate that it is "on" ? What is the make and model number of the router ? Try the following - test after each: Turn the router off - leave for 30 seconds - turn it on again. Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties Check the box next to "use the following IP Address" and also "Use the following DNS Server Address" use these settings: ( these are fairly standard but I can check when you tell me which router you have ) IP Address - 192 - 168 - 1 - 10 Subnet Mask 255 - 255 - 255 - 0 Default Gateway 192 - 168 - 1 - 1 Use the DNS settings as shown below: ( don't forget to click OK ) http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/sshot20100605222815.png If that doesn't work ....... Sorry KenB, I should of mentioned in my previous post that it was the default 'Netgear' IP address which I tried and still did not work. I wasn't even able to ping 192.168.0.1!! Quote

If it cannot do this what error message are you getting ? 2. What was the result of the WinsockFix ? 3. Please confirm that you have tried 2 working adapters. If you right click on the monitor icon ( bottom right of screen ) try the "Repair" option [ WinsockFix should have done this ] Also .... There should be "Connect ot a Network" ......can you see yours. What happens if you try to connect ?
