starts to install and then he gets a note...

....no can do...go to:-

"XP Service Pack web site.....select Problems downloading service pack...and

follow the instructions on how to download service pack that doesn't need a

web connection..."

....he can't find the web site or instructions referred to...any help much

appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Never seen an error message that said no can do.

Download and install the network installation, for SP3

He needs to download Service Pack 1a before he can then download SP2 and SP3

Skip SP1 and download/install SP2 manually; then install SP3 via Windows

Update.

That is incorrect.

Listen to PA Bear. First download and install SP2. Then install SP3.

That is not incorrect: WinXP SP3 will install if WinXP SP1(s) or WinXP SP2

is already installed. WinXP SP2 will install if WinXP Gold or WinXP SP1(a)

is installed.

If it were my machine, that's what I'd do. OP's MMV.

Really? Guess I wasn't paying attention!

(I'll assume the (s) was a typo for (a).)

I thought it was possible to go from SP1 to SP3. Are you saying that one

can only go from SP1a (or later) to SP3? If so, I guess I just learned

something!

Still, I'm pretty sure OP is incorrect. AFAIK, one need not

download/install SP1a in order to go to SP2. At least that's what I

always thought... (And I'm pretty sure that that's what you just said,

PA Bear!)

Re: How to download/install Service Pack?

But, as friend has only dial up and SP3 is large he wishes to do this all

off line....hence

I have provided him with 1a, 2 and 3 on disc.

I'm pretty certain he told me he tried to install 2 but found he needed to

install 1a first.

Do you believe that is not the case and he can bypass 1a and install 2...and

then 3?

Re: How to download/install Service Pack?

WinXP SP2 will install on a machine running WinXP Gold (no Service Packs).

WinXP SP3 will install on machine running WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2.

However you do it, you can skip at least one (1) Service Pack:

WinXP => WinXP SP2 => WinXP SP3 => All post-SP3 updates; or

WinXP => WinXP SP1 => WinXP SP3 => All post-SP3 updates
