warby44 Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hi, can anyone help - my Hard drive has died on my PC, it will no longer boot up, I have some mimportant files I need to get off then I will happily put a nail through it! I have tried unsuccessfully adding as a slave on my other desktop PC, so Im stuck on what to do next. Will any of the hard drive docking stations available now be able to help, just to be able to access the information? Quote
KenB Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS How did you do this? Is this an IDE or SATA drive? If it is IDE then how you connected it may explain why you couldn't accesss it. Will any of the hard drive docking stations available now be able to help If you connected up as a slave and it wasn't recognised it is unlikely that an enclosure would be any better. Plastic Nev Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Hi, docking stations are expensive for a once only use, you can get adapters to USB fairly cheaply or for a little more, an enclosure. You just need to know which type of drive you have, either IDE or SATA in order to buy the correct one. Once you have an adapter or enclosure, a trick that can sometimes make a stuck drive run is to freeze the drive. Wrap it in a seal able bag and place in the kitchen freezer overnight, then connect and try before it warms up again. If that fails I am afraid that you will need specialists to retrieve the data, which can be expensive. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here.
