xp service packs

I am trying build up my service packs on a computer with XP. I had SP3 and

wasn't able to install certain updates, so I removed it and now I should be

down to the base XP. When I tried to start again by installing SP1 from the

Microsoft website, I get to the install part and then an error message says

"expected version not present on system"

I have the original disk, but I would rather not have to go to the extent of

reinstalling from the disk. Is there another way to get SP1, SP2 and SP#

and then do the normal updates?

If you go to start | run | winver, what does it say?

No need! SP2 doesn't require SP1. Just do SP2 if you aren't sure you need

SP3. Download it here:

Check in add/remove programs to see what's there. Note that service packs

are cumulative.

Aha Version 5.1 SP2. I assume that's why it would allow for an

installation of SP1

There are no service packs listed in the add/remove Three was there but I

removed it.

Should I install Sp2 again in case I lost something when I removed some

other files.

If I am going to put SP3 on, should I do an update before I download and

install it or does it not matter.

All the info you need to read on SP3, and earlier SPs is at the above MS link.
