RE: SP3 and Blue Screen of Death

We encountered the same problem today. The BSOD provide no information other

than the STOP code, which is as follows:

0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF7AB48EB, 0XF7AB4F4, 0XF7AB44F0)

The system will not boot to safe mode, will not boot to “last good

configuration,” will not boot to anything but BSOD. To further aggravate the

situation, the manufacturer (Dell) no longer provides the Windows XP disk

with their systems so you can’t boot to the disk and recover. This is the

kind of stuff that is truly irritating and very costly. Doesn’t Microsoft

test this stuff before they release it???

Continual reboots or can only boot into Safe Mode after installing WinXP

SP3?

See

http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2008/05/08/does-your-amd-based-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx

[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool

that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing

(WinXP SP3)."]

Possible workaround: Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to

INTELPMM.OLD.

.. You receive a "Stop 0x0000007E" error message after you upgrade to Windows

XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer

(Revised 11 Jun-08)

Not only that, but you cluelessly did not make an image backup of the disk.

And, evidently, you did not read the Help & Support article "Steps to take

before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3" as that article (last reviewed

May 21, 2008) describes one reason for Stop 7E.

Another poster shows fixes for several reasons for stop 7E.

Clueless? The problem is that automatic updates was on. The damage was done

before intervention was possible. You would think that if there are known

problems with the software, Microsoft would have the decency of ensuring that

the user is required to intervene and become aware of the known issues before

allowing the download. Heck, I wasn't even aware that SP3 was being deployed.

Rest assured that automatic updates is off on all our other computers now.

Thanks for your meaningless advice Jim...

Continual reboot to BSOD. Cannot get into safe mode. Cannot do anything. Dell

does not provide XP disc and assures owner that there is an image on the hard

drive that will allow restoration to factory condition if a problem develops.

Of course, the computer has to be bootable to do that. We're dead in the

water.

What's the STOP error on the BSOD?

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for

Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and

e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows

So, you cluelessly allowed automatic update to install a service pack. I do

not allow automatic update for even the most benign updates.

You are also clueless for not knowing that SP3 has been offered via

automatic update for several months now.

By the way, as has been discussed here lots and lots of times, stop 7e is

usually caused by an incorrect OEM setup of computers with AMD processors.

If this is not the case with your computer, other posters have mentioned.

Re: SP3 and Blue Screen of Death

The Stop Code is Ox0000007E. The computer is a Dell with Intel Pentium D, so

I doubt it is the "non-Intel" issue everyone else is complaining about.

During my research I discovered that many other Intel-based computers are

having the same problem.

Anyway, thanks for your help. I decided to just borrow an XP disk from

someone so I could access the Recovery Console and manually uninstalled SP3.

Then used system restore to get back to the last check point. Back in

business.

What a pain in the butt....
