Make an *image* someplace like on a USB drive or such.

Make a bootable CD recovery CD.

Now when the drive or OS dies, you pull out the boot CD, connect the USB

drive, boot the PC and restore from the USB drive.

You should boot once and verify the USB backup by the way.

OR at least restore one file. Which you can by the way, you don't have

to restore everything (the entire image).

How to use Acronis 9 to backup Win XP o/s?

I've got Acronis True Image 9.

I'd like to do something fairly simple - backup XP with all it's updates and

settings, and have a disk that I can boot off of to get the system up again

in case my o/s gets blown away (we have lots of lightening and power spikes

around here).

I'll be damned if I can figure out how that's done from the Acronis info.

It'd be great if I can get some valid info - thanks.

My experience is with Acronis 11. I used Acronis to make

the Acronis Secure Zone (SZ) which is a hidden partition

on the hard drive. I backed up the hard drive to the SZ.

Acronis provides the means to burn a bootable cd which

accesses the SZ and writes your backup to the damaged

partition. This works if your hard drive is not damaged,

just the OS or a virus ruins your hard drive.

For a ruined hard drive, you will need to have Acronis

[meaning you have to buy a new hard drive, starting anew]

backup to dvds, not more than 4, so about 17gigs if

you don't use compression. If you have a lot of big

picture files, you could store them on data dvds so

there is more room for the OS and applications backup.

The manual which explains this is available on the

Acronis website. I imagine Acronis 9 has the same

basic functionality as Acronis 11, but you should check.

Your computer may have an OEM hidden partion which uses

F11 so then don't use the Acronis F11 boot backup option,

but use the bootable cd that you make with Acronis.

I recently watched a video tutorial on using Acronis, on YouTube. I

was doing research before buying. I think I may have been directed to

the video through their website. Don't remember what version though.

Acronis has some great user forums.

I can't help you with ATI V9, but performing a backup such as you want is

quite easy with ATI V10.

Help for Acronis True Image users can be found at

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65

For a guide to creating a rescue CD and doing a simple backup of everything,

including the operating system, read the following:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/supportfiles/gh-acronis-backup1.pdf

This guide was written by one of the exceptionally knowledgeable people on

the forum. He's also done a guide to restoring. I believe his instructions

are for version 10, but they worked fine for my version 11. With lots of

screenshots, his guide is much easier to follow than the Acronis manual is.

It's normal to let ATI set your system so that very early

in bootup you can press F11 and find yourself in a version

of TI that will let you recover your C: partition from the

Secure Zone (or from external media). Short of totalling

the hard drive, I've yet to mess things up so badly that

the F11 function wasn't available. Nevertheless, you

should always have a couple of bootable Acronis CDs.

I have actually recovered someone's C: this way when

their drive crashed.
