try and turn my computer on nothing happens.

Last week when it wasn't booting up i thought the processor could be overheating so i unplugged the power to it and turned the computer on. After doing this the computwer would flicker on and off every second until i turned the PSU off. After doing this and plugen i tging the processor back in the computer does nothing i replug in the computer.

I tried re setting the motherboard and the heat sink but nothing changed.

I bought a power supply tester and when i hook the 24 pin and the 8 pin processor cords up to it and test the psu all the fans and everything turn on in the computer and the Voltage seems right on the tester.( i have no clue though)

Hi and welcome to ExTS

processor could be overheating so i unplugged the power to it

??? Are you talking about a 4 pin connector from the PSU ?

I tried re setting the motherboard

Was this a BIOS reset ?

Voltage seems right on the tester

The voltages should be 12v 5v and 3.3v within about 5% - so 12v should read no lower than 11.4v [ and this is low]....5v no lower than 4.75v ....and 3.3v no lower than 3.1v

If you have had the CPU out of the motherboard and taken the heat sink off it then you will need to clean off the old thermal paste with rubbing alcohol ( pharmacy ) and re-apply a very thin coat of thermal paste.

If you are still having problems after this then I suggest the following:

1. Switch off at the wall - leave the plug in to maintain the earth connection to the motherboard.

2. Unplug all external devices ( printer; monitor etc )

3. Take the side panel off and touch the bare metal to discharge any static in you.

4. Take all cards ( RAM; Sound; Video etc ) off the board

5. Disconnect the power connections to the hard drive and DVD drive.

6. Disconnect the data cables to the hard drive and DVD drives at the motherboard end.

7. Leave the 20(4) way Power connector from the PSU attached.

8. Switch on.

You should get POST beeps if you have an internal speaker connected.

The case fans should spin and there may be LEDs lit on the motherboard.

The system should be stable.

Is it ?

Do you get any beeps?

Thank you very much for your help.

I had already reapplied the thermal paste when starting the thread.

I had also taken everything off the motherboard and reattached it.

I also had reset the CMOS by taking out the battery for a few minutes.

Recent Steps

I took everything off except and just left the motherboard pin in and the fans and tried turning it on and nothing happened.

Nothing lights up and no fans begin to spin.

I also do not have an internal speaker so even if it did start i would not be able to hear the posting beeps. (I had been wondering for a while why i never heard these thanks for clearing that up)

The power levels looked correct as to your specifications 11.9 5 and 3.3 but when i just checked it i heard a POP and smelled a strong smoky smell. :(. Something just got destroyed. This was when nothing was plugged in so it has to be either the processor or the motherboard.

A pop and a burning smell is not good news at this point.

I doubt it is the processor if only the twenty four pin plug was connected to the motherboard.

With the power turned off, have a good look round everything on the motherboard, what you are looking for is either blackened and burned area's, components broken or looking like they have exploded and similar.

To check the processor, remove the heatsink and check the sides of the processor, or look to see if it seems to have lifted out of its socket due to something expanding underneath. I doubt that though at the moment.

If nothing obvious on the motherboard, make sure all mains is disconnected and plug removed from the wall outlet, remove the power supply from the case, and away, then see if there is a residual burning smell from the power supply. Do not dismantle the power supply to visually check, but a look through any vents might just show if something has blown inside it.

Please let us know if you find anything or not before going any further, the chance of further damage is now possible if power is turned back on.

Nev.

Both the motherboard and processor look fine. I cleaned off the thermal paste again. When i took the Power Suuply out it smelled singed but i couldn't see anything wrong. I am guessing i should buy a new one. Any reccomendations? My current specs

Could the initial problem of not starting up be an issue with the PSU as well if the computer wasn't getting enough power during boot up?

Simple answer - Yes

i heard a POP and smelled a strong smoky smell.

This sounds like a capacitor blowing.

Take a second look at the motherboard. You are looking for capacitors that have a domed or burnt top.

( it should be flat )

It could be the PSU.

If you were getting a burning smell it should be possible to take the PSU out ( isolate it from the case ) and you should be able to smell burning.

That Radeon HD 6950 needs at least a 500 Watt PSU.

I just rechecked the motherboard and didn't see any capacitors that had either a domed orburnt top. The PSU still has a burning smell to it.

The PSU still has a burning smell to it.

There are capacitors in the PSU unit too - looks like a replacement PSU is in order.

It is NOT a good idea to attempt to take PSUs apart as they can hold a charge and give you a nasty belt.

There is a possibility that - if the PSU has died - it may have damaged the m/board too.

The only way for you to find out is to replace the PSU.

This is good news.

I assume that the motherboard was exactly the same as the original ?

I Have no Video

When you switch on - do you get anything on screen at all ?

Different Motherboard

Nothing at all

If you used a different motherboard I am surprised that the system booted if you just inserted the old hard drive.

Unless you re-installed Windows ? (and you wouldn't be able to do that with no visible graphics :) )

Do you have on-board Video or just the Radeon card?

If you have the 2 options try taking the card out and using the on-board connection.

I just hooked up the monitor directly to the motherboard and took out the video card and there was still no change. I think one of my friends is coming over this weekend with his motherboard and hopefully we will be able to figure out what is wrong.

I would be inclined to suspect the motherboard has a problem.

Your friend's m/b will confirm this.

Be prepared for the system not to boot - all you need is for the video to be working to confirm that the m/b is at fault.
