Guest John Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 What is the recommended practice for allowing offline files from a shared file server? I have one user that has huge amounts of data set to be available offline and I suspect this could be a problem. Is my suspicion warranted? I think if everyone was doing it it would be even worse so why allow one to do it... client xp pro sp3 server 2003 r2 latest sp...

I personally don't enable offline files for LAN connected users at all. I don't see the point, and I *have* seen people lose data using offline files in the past (particularly large amounts) when they worked offline on laptops, even. I am not a fan of the feature and won't use it anymore. That said, many people do use it successfully. My question for your company would be along the lines of, "What is the reason you want it enabled?"
Guest David Shen [MSFT] Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 RE: limit offline files Hello John, Thanks for posting here. Actually, we don't recommend you make large amount of network share data set to be available offline on the client side. If the target network share is too large in size, it will make the client computer take a long time for the Client-Side-Caching engine to see the network as available and attempt to synchronize data next time the network share is changed. There is no limit on the number of files in offline cache. However, the offline files cache size cannot be bigger than 2 GB on the client side. This 2 GB limit applies to only temporarily cached files, which means those cached files that have not been explicitly "made available offline". Hope it helps.
