Guest computerchallengedcc Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Dell XPS Home - 300 G hard drive, 4 G RAM XP/SP3 Kaspersky Internet Suite 7.0- SpybotSearch & Destroy-Spyblaster- Windows Defender- All Windows Updates current: For about a month, when I shut down my pc, shut down seems to 'hang'. I get the normal shut down screen,"savings settings' windows is shutting down'etc." Then a second or two later, get a black screen, and then back to shutting down, etc. again. This time my pc does shut down. I cannot pinpoint anything I could have done to cause this. Only changes made during this timeframe is uninstalling previous version of S &D & installing latest version (V1.6.0.31) and installing any windows/office 2007 updates. Also installed a second printer. I am NOT very experienced in how to troubleshoot what could be causing this. i was advised to look at the Event Log, but that is way over my knowledge to interpret. Also was suggested to do this (below) but I don't know what that is, or what it does, so didn't know if I should try that or not?? I would appreciate any help or suggestions you can offer me, but please, explain in simple terms or steps that i can follow. Thank you so much for your assistance. You might try running chkdsk /r on the boot drive. You mentioned several other items/procedures, but I don't recall seeing any mention of that. Chkdsk Explained, Understanding What Chkdsk Does - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314835/EN-US/ Start/Run...type chkdsk /r, with a space between k and /. Type Y, hit Enter. Reboot.

If something has caused a problem, it didn’t happen in the month since the system was doing this, but just before. If I had to guess, I would say that maybe the new printer’s driver is delaying Windows from shutting down like before. Try booting the system with the new printer unplugged and see if it does that the next time you shut down. -- Alec S. news/alec->synetech/cjb/net
Guest computerchallengedcc Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Re: Hanging up at shut down problem Thank you so much for the quick response. I tried unplugging the printer- Still have the problem at shut down. i have never had this happen on any pc in the past- And as i said, this just started happening so i think there has to be a reason why??? Welcome any other suggestions? Thanks again.
