Error in Microsoft Update - Administrators Only

Hi

I get the following error on Windows XP x64 Professional when I try to do a

Microsoft update. I tried to run Microsoft update by right clicking on the

update program. Here I selected 'Run as', and unchecked 'Run this program

with restricted access.

-Start-

Administrators Only

To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an

administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is

connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from

completing this procedure.

Note If you are running a Windows 2000 (except DataCenter), Windows XP, or

Windows Server 2003 operating system, you can run the local administrator

account on your computer without having to log off and then log on again.

To run as the local administrator in Windows XP or Windows Server 2003:

Click Start, and then click All Programs (or right-click Windows Update if

it is available).

Right-click Windows Update.

Click Run as on the menu that appears.

Do one of the following:

Enter the password for the administrator.

Enter the user name, domain name, and password of a different user account

that has administrative permissions on this computer.

To run as the local administrator in Windows 2000:

Click Start, right-click Windows Update, and then click Run As on the menu

that appears.

Do one of the following:

Enter the password for the administrator.

Enter the user name, domain name, and password of a different user account

that has administrative permissions on this computer.

If the option to run as the local administrator is not available:

Click Start, right-click Windows Update, and then click Properties.

Click the Shortcut tab, and then select the Run as different user check box.

-End-

I tried the following; still the error persists!

-Start-

1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."

2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click "OK."

3. Locate and select the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate

4. click "Edit," and then click "Permissions."

5. Click "Add," and then type "Everyone" in the

dialog box that appears.

6. Click "Check Names," and then click "OK."

7. Select "Everyone" in the "Group or user names" list.

8. Under Permissions for "Everyone," select the "Full Control" check box

in the "Allow" column. Note that the "Read" check box in the "Allow"

column is now also selected.

9. Select each user, in turn, in the "Group or user names" list, and then

verify

that no check boxes are selected in the "Deny" column. Clear any check

boxes that are selected in the "Deny" column.

10. Click "Advanced," and then select the "Replace permission entries on all

child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" check box,

and then click "OK."

11. Click "Yes" if you are prompted for confirmation.

-End-

I tried to run the update with firewall disabled. But still the error stays!

Help is appreciated very much!

[Crosspost to WU newsgroup]

WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3?

Is this a sudden, new problem?

You receive one or more error messages when the system administrator

disables Windows Update or Microsoft Update:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326686

You receive an "Administrators only" error message when you try to visit the

Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316524

Also see:

"When trying to access the Windows Update Web site you receive the following

error message: Access Denied. Please check with your System Administrator

(Windows XP and Windows 2000)"

Re: Error in Microsoft Update - Administrators Only

Did none of the information at the links I posted earlier help at all? Is

this a sudden, new problem?

Re: Error in Microsoft Update - Administrators Only

I have a DELL Precision M90 with Windows XP PRO x64 and I received the same

error when I installed the HP C8180 All-in-one printer. I tried everything

to fix the "Admnistrator Only" error. The way I fix it was by editing the

regestry. Follow these steps:

Hit "Start"

Hit "Run"

Type "regedit" (without the "")

Look for the key

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet

Settings\User Agent]

Using the right click on your mouse select "DELETE"

Make sure you delete the parrent key and all the subkeys on it.

REBOOT your computer.

Try windows update again.

Good Luck !!
