Hi

I use IE7 and am happy with it ~ up until now have had no problems, however,

since a few days ago I have been having problems getting web pages to open ~

I keep getting IE cannot display this page . . .

I checked my MS update history tonight and found SP3 had downloaded

automatically ` would this be the cause of the problem ?

How do I get back to normal ? Do I uninstall SP3 ?

What effect will it have on my computer ~ ? Do I need SP3 ?

I do not want to change back to IE6 ( as I like IE7 ) if I really don't have

to.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Usually to fix IE7 problems, they recommended un-installing / re-

install IE7. However, when SP3 is installed, you can never uninstall

IE7 without first uninstalling SP3.

Too much frustration ~ I simply uninstalled SP3 and fixed the issue.

SP3 was also causing freezing and pages not responding ~ having to close too

many things by using task manager.

Much happier without SP3

Have also turned off my automatic updates so it will not download itself

again.

Thnaks for all your assistance and time

You don't have to turn off updates, Just open up updates manually and

find the SP3 update. Expand it and check the box to not load it save

and hide hidden downloads. The others will then load.

If you also do like I did, just set the settings to don't download and

just notify you. That way you can pick the ones you want.

Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from

Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed":

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818

If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help, try the

following:

1. Disable your anti-virus application, all Norton Add-ons (if any), any

real-time protection provided by an anti-spyware application (except for

Windows Defender; includes Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS

guard.exe, etc.), disable any third-party firewall AND THEN enable the

Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,

browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus

application has been re-enabled! If you're running ZA Free firewall, you

may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it.

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB953838)"

via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right)

and reboot.

**Vista: Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7

(KB953838)" via Control Panel | Security | Windows Update | View installed

updates and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates

offered (i.e., KB953838). If a Root Certificates update is listed in the

Optional Updates category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's

enhanced security.

**Vista: Run Windows Update manually and install any Important updates

offered (i.e., KB953838). If a Root Certificates update is listed in the

Optional Updates category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's

enhanced security.

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if

applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable (or reinstall) your

third-party firewall.

SP3 did not cause the problem.

You do not have to turn of AU to avoid reinstalling SP3.

You're likely to encounter the same problem when you install the most most

recent or any future Security Updates for IE7. (I can assure you that

you're missing the most recent one now and that you'd be foolish not keep IE

fully patched at all times.)

RE: SP3 problems ~ with IE7 ??..."

Hi Nass

My system is clean. I use Adaware, Spybot and CW Shredder. It is also an

intermittent problem of not displaying web pages, it is not happening all the

time.

Last IE7 update was KB953838 I have removed that to see what happens.

I am running AVG Free version 8 as anti virus.

Re: SP3 problems ~ with IE7 ??? or not

Ok PA Bear

I have disabled the only thing I could and that was Windows Firewall. (I do

not have anyother firewall ~ am running AVG * Free) Have uninstalled

KB953838 - rebooted - reinstalled KB953838 and Root Certificate. Have

rebooted and enabled Windows Firewall.

Now I suppose it is a matter of waiting to see if the problem arises again.

As it is an intermittent problem with web pages not being displayed....

Is there anything else I need to do ?

Thanks again for your simple instructions to follow. I hope I have done it

right.

Re: SP3 problems ~ with IE7 ??? or not

Never, EVER disable the Windows Firewall! It was not the source of your

problem.

Are you running AVG Free 7.5 or AVG 8.0 now?

Was a Norton or McAfee application ever installed on the machine (e.g., a

free-trial version that came preinstalled on the machine)?

Re: SP3 problems ~ with IE7 ??? or not

Sorry Windows Firewall is back on.

Running AVG8.0 Free.

Yes Did have Norton some years ago but it caused too many problems so I

uninstalled and did a search and deleted all bits I could find.

Download & run this removal tool to address the problem:

Norton Removal Tool

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Using Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Norton applications doesn't remove

everything. See this discussion:

Are you referring to software associated with a free McAfee online scan or

an installed McAfee application such as McAfee Security Center, McAfee

VirusScan, or McAfee Internet Security?

Re: SP3 problems ~ with IE7 ??? or not

Thanks Bear,

I am now finding that my IE7 is taking along time to load a page and very

often it freezes and comes up with "not responding" and will not shut down by

itself, I have to use Task Manager to close it or sometimes Task Manager

opens and the IE7 page then starts to work, so I just close Task Manager.

This is most frustrating and SLOW ~ any suggestions ?

Re: SP3 problems ~ with IE7 ??? or not

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log

to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in

conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on

its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any

hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
