Guest Ben Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Hi, I'm running a Dell Latitude D830, 3gb ram, 2.6Ghz Centrino, and Windows XP SP3. The machine usually boots, and logs on to the point where you can begine to run programs, in under 2 minutes. Friday I decided to upgrade to Media PLayer 11, (because I was fed up with it nagging me to upgrade). I performed the upgrade, and rebooted. However, since the upgrade, bootup now takes about 5 minutes, with Windows hanging at the 'running startup scripts' screen, then once you've entered your username/password, login takes another 5 minutes, with Windows just displaying the standard background, and nothing else. You can't even ctrl+alt+del to bring up task manager to see whats happening in the backgroup. There doesn't seem to be any disk activity, at least the disk light on the laptop isn't flashing, it just seems to hang. Eventually when you do get to the desktop and try to run a program, it just hangs again, launching IE7 just took me 2 minutes from clicking the icon, to it actually opening, and it seems to be about the same for other programs. I have run WMP11 on this laptop previously, with WinXP, (ended up formatting due to another reason) without any issues. Can anyone suggest why WMP11 might cause this problem, or how to fix it? I'm just about to install BootLogXP and reboot again, to try and see whats running at startup that might be causing this issue. Many thanks Ben

Yes, have rebooted about 8 times, each time its close to 10 minutes to completed startup+login. Apps are taking over 2 minutes to start, IE7, Firefox, 'My Computer' etc. Click on them, wait2 - 3 mintues, the program will eventually open, another minutes for it to completely load to the point where you can start surfing/begin using whatever program you opened. I got into the office today and put the laptop into my docking station, and it booted in a minutes, and logged on in another minute, I rebooted twice and got the same result. Now I'm back home again, its back to taking 5 minutes to boot, and 5 minutes to login again. This has only been happening since Friday, and the only change then was the installation of WMP11, I don't know if its related, but its the only thing I can think of. Ben
