SP3 changing OE Newsreader settings?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Having held off SP3 for a while until the dust settled I thought I would

update all my computers.

All seemed to go well apart from my main machine (isn't it always the way:-)

where I rebooted and I saw the 'Setting up Outlook Express Preferences' or

something similar.

Why would SP3 want to do that?

I see now my customised toolbar has defaulted back to something else and I

don't know what else may have changed.

So...why did SP3 decide to change my OE Settings and more importantly what

exactly did it change apart from the toolbar that I can see?

Thanks & regards,

How many times did you reboot after installing SP3? You should have

rebooted twice before doing anything else. You should have also disabled

your anti virus and malware apps.

Thanks for the reply Alias...however helpful it might be! ;^)

I never noticed it saying that I had to reboot twice before I done anything

else?

I've been a Windows user for many years so I gave up counting how many times

it reboots in any case...with XP they said it wouldn't have to reboot so

much especially when installing software but it seems that it still

excessively reboots.

As for AV etc. I had fully uninstalled NAV2008 prior to my installing Avast!

*after* the SP3 upgrade as I thought that would be a good thing.

I kept my old W2K running parallel to this one for ages while I meticulously

copied configs/settings for all the programs I use to make sure I didn't

miss anything...

Aahh...well...I should be used to it by now but it is still annoying...

Can't even see Send/Receive to put back on my toolbar...:-(

Not sure whet else is FUBAR

Thanks & regards,

1. Was NAV running in the background when you installed SP3?

2. Have you downloaded & run the Norton Removal Tool yet? =>

Re: SP3 changing OE Newsreader settings?

Thanks for the reply PA Bear,

I doubt it could have been running in the background...I uninstalled it

before I even went near SP3! ;^)

After uninstalling NAV I noticed a new menu entry for LiveUpdate

Notification or something.

Couldn't uninstall that because it told me a program depended on it -

strange since it appeared *after* NAV was uninstalled.

I also wanted to uninstall LiveUpdate itself but at that point I still had

Ghost installed but after the cheek of Symantec putting something on my

system after I removed one of their products I uninstalled everything

Norton/Symantec/Live-whatever...on all 8 machines here and I am going to

take my last Symantec purchase back for a refund...there...I feel much

better now! ;^)

Then I ran the Norton Removal Tool & rebooted.

Only then did I install SP3

First time I had uninstalled NAV before a Service Pack and the only time I

have had trouble...

No big deal...I was just curious what else may have been changed as I used

to clickon a Send/Receive button on the toolbar but it is ghosted and can't

be used now...:-(

Kind regards,

The above at least implies that you'd uninstalled NAV and installed Avast

after you'd installed SP3.
