TS, Outlook autoarchive won't go away

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure whether to ask here or in Outlook group so here goes.

OL2k3 on a 2k3 TS.

Error message: "The file ....\Outlook\archive.pst could not be found" [OK]

This message usually pops up when initiating a new message.

Clicking ok brings up the "Create/Open Personal Folders File" dialog to

create/save archive.pst. However, the setting under Tools|Options, Other

tab, Autoarchive button shows auto archive to be turned off.

Is there anything else that could be causing this popup?

It is driving the users mad.

RE: TS, Outlook autoarchive won't go away

I don't have an Outlook 2003 installation at my fingertips, but in 2007 you

switch to folder list view, select data file management and delete the pst

file in question.

The problem is likely that the PST file was probably left on a different TS

and you're using Roaming Profiles.

You can control the Auto Archive and default PST location settings via GPO

by downloading the Office Admin Templates from office.microsoft.com.

Re: TS, Outlook autoarchive won't go away

Thanks Patrick.

The archive.pst does not exist, that's why OL complains that it cannot find

it. However, it is the only one listed in data file management. I'll see

what happens when I delete it from each user's list.

In Dec 07 the sole TS died and was replaced; and then another TS added for

redundancy. I can't recall now how the profiles were treated then but I do

know that all profiles were rebuilt last May by deleting all old profiles

and having them recreated as each user logged on. Could this have caused it?

Re: TS, Outlook autoarchive won't go away

It's possible, but another thing to do is to search the user's HKCU hive with

Regedit to see where this PST is referenced and delete this entry. The file

does not exist, but the registry entry is likely still there. On my notebook

this exists here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Catalog\

In this key there is a REG_BINARY entry for each data file. For Office 2003

this would be in 11.0, not 12.0.

As always, make a backup of the registry, or the user's profile before

editing the registry, but I'm fairly certain this is what will fix your

problem.

Re: TS, Outlook autoarchive won't go away

Thanks Patrick

That seems to have done the trick.
