I have a wireless internet conection with virgin media. I use a laptop (old) and a PC in a separate room from the reuter (DELL PC is under two years old - windows 7 OS). Last night when switched on the screen was blank. After turning on and off a few times, it started in safe mode. Eventually got it to start this morning in normal mode but with no internet connection. Laptop still has internet connection, phoned virgin and everything is ok from their side, also reset reuter. Checked dongle - is fine, checked connection with an ethernet cable - still no connection. Virgin media name appears under the network list but says 'limited access' next to it but clicking on internet link gives no connection at all. I clicked 'status' and it says IPv4 not connected and IPv6 not connected. I paid a tech guy to come out but he says it is weird and he would have to wipe the computer and maybe it is the motherboard. Help anyone!

Hi dewey1 and welcome to ExTS

I cannot see how this could be the motherboard as you have tried 2 different options with this PC ( wired and wireless ) which use different adapters.

Start > type in ...devmgmt.msc ...........ENTER

Click the + next to network adapters

Let me know exactly what is listed please.

There should be 2 devices.

Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?

Hi,

Go back to Device Manager > right click on the ones with a yellow exclamation mark > Uninstall

Re-boot.

Go back to Device Manager and let me know what is there now.

Do you use a USB adapter for the wireless connection ?

Hi

I uninstalled all the ones with the yellow triangle. However the one called WAN Miniport (IKEv2) wouldn't uninstall. It looked like it was going to but then remained on the list. I rebooted and the following are there.

Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet

Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

WAN Miniport (IKEv2) (yellow triangle at this one)

WNDA3100v2- RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB Adapter

I have a NetGear dongle to connect to the internet.

thanks

Hi,

Attach the cable as this is the least problematic.

In the bottom right of screen there should be a monitor icon.

Right click on this.

"Connect to a Network"

If you click on this - can you see your network?

If you try to "Connect" by clicking on it to highlight - does it ask for a Network Key ?

[ thinking about it - you shouldn't need to do this wired so try the above wireless ]

Check this too:

Start > type in ....services.msc .......ENTER

Scroll down and look for :

WLAN autoconfig .....this should be set to auto

Wired autoconfig ......this should be manual or auto

They should not be disabled.

If you altered either - try connecting again.

Hi

Tried this and both are ok. Didn't change anything. Could a Trojan have caused this to happen?

thanks

Hi,

It is very unlikely to be malware - we can check that out later if all else fails :)

try this:

Start ......type in ......cmd ....do not hit ENTER

Right click on the cmd.exe that shows top left of screen > Run as Administrator

At the command prompt type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: type in ...... netsh winsock reset catalog .........ENTER

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. type in ,,,,,,netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log ........ENTER

And just for good measure ....

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. type in ,,,,netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log .......ENTER

Try the connection again.
