I put in a new graphics card, and it didnt work the next time i turned it on, the was no output.

I took it to a pc shop, they said it was a faulty motherboard and i need a new one. My MB was quite old, 3-4 years and it was a Foxconn g31mx 46gmx series. i have a Radeon HD 6850 graphics card which is brand new ( apart from when it killed my MB) i have a 650W psu for the card and it was fitted before i tried the Graphics card.

So basically i really need some advice on what motherboard i should purchase, i want a decent one that means i dont have to change processor or Graphics card, for not too much £. Around 50-90 pounds.

Plz help

Also i dont know what my processor is, how do i find out since i have no working computer? all the other Q+A's require a working pc

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

First answer for the CPU, I am afraid the only way is to dismantle the fan off the metal finned heatsink, then remove the heat sink and carefully remove the CPU chip, hopefully there will be the details somewhere on the chip itself. You would have to do all that anyway to fit it to a new mother board.

Next is the graphics card, a little worrying if it did indeed damage the mother board, personally, I would be finding a different tech shop to check out both before investing in a new MB. After all, you don't want to be in a situation where the graphics card, if it is faulty, blows another new board.

Hi,

Is this your present motherboard?

http://reviews.cnet.com/motherboards/foxconn-g31mx-k-motherboard/1707-3049_7-33352426.html

If so .....

Your CPU is socket 775.

If you wanted to keep your present CPU then the m/board you select would need to be Socket 775 compatible.

One more point:

If you get a new motherboard you will need to re-install the Operating System on your hard drive.

Windows is "clever" enough to recognise a new environment and it will refuse to boot up.

Thankyou

well, i also took it to a friend who works on $1000000 flight sims, and he checked sum things and said it was the mother board, i will see how the card has affected it, and check if it will do it again to a new board. Thankyou for the advice on the Processor btw, i asked around and no-one knew how to do it without output. Thanks for the Advice!

Oh and i checked the link it is, thanks!

U guys are sooo useful i will use this forum lots in the future!

Hi,

Your new m/board supports up to 8 GB DDr3 RAM.

Your old board was DDR2 - so you will need new RAM.

The CPU socket is the same LGA775 - you can double check the compatability on the Gigabite website.

see here

You need to know which CPU you have on the old board.

or would it kill the motherboard again?

It wouldn't "kill" the board - it just wouldn't recognise any more than 8GB.

It may not even allow you to boot up.

If the board specs say 8GB then you are wasting money buying more.

One more point:

If you are putting in more than 4GB RAM then you would need to install a 64 bit O/S

A 32 bit O/S will not utilise any more than 3.5 GB.

my OS is 64bit and i found a really good deal on 16gb ddr3 which was 2 x 8gb. also if it says max supported is 4GB is that per slot so actually 2 x 4GB or would it have to be 2x 2GB? Edited by Mc_jazza

Hi,

If the m/b specs say 8GB max - that is the maximum TOTAL RAM it supports. 2 x 4GB................. [ not 2 x 8GB ]

Socket 775 is a little dated now and this is why you are finding that the boards you are looking at do not support a lot of RAM.

Also [ I should have mentioned this earlier ] if you are intending using a 64 bit O/S then your CPU must be 64 bit compatible.

If you intend using your present processor then you will need to find out what it is first before you spend any money.

===============

Your motherboard is a micro-ATX form factor. [ smaller than standard boards ]

If you are using the same case then you need to select a m-ATX board.

This is one I found that seems to fit your specs:

You have gone about this the wrong way.

You have bought the ram first then trying to find a m/board that is compatible.

Your RAM - 1600MHz - will fit this board but will operate at a lower speed.

You need to Google

"micro ATX DDR3 8GB socket 775" to get more options.

You then need to compare your CPU with the manufacturer's compatability list.

ive got the processor out but the isnt any info on it apart from 2v825037a2602. plus when i copied and pasted the RAM info i missed out a 1, it was 16GB. i get the fact that my options are limited but the offer for 16GB was amazing, ill probably make money by selling it.

i had already updated my computer to 64 bit before it all went wrong.

We could have run "Speccy" software to tell us which CPU you had - there was no need to take it out.

AMD and Intel invariably have info written on the CPU to identify it.

If you haven't taken the heatsink off yet - you could put it back in and run speccy.
