If you have a computer for which the manufacturer included a "restore

partition" on the hard drive instead of giving you a Windows XP CD *and*

you want to restore your computer to it's "out of the box" state (which

will delete all of your personal files), look in the documentation that

came with it (or go to the manufacturer's web site) to find the key to

press to initiate this action.

Whatever key that brings up your BIOS setting, which varies depending on

who made your computer. Change the boot order to boot from CD first,

then you may be able to try repairing or reinstalling Windows.

Replies are made to the newsgroup, not to e-mail addresses.

Uh, huh, huh, huh… he said f-key. Yeah, f-key, f-keeeeey!!!

Sorry.

Anyway, you’re probably asking about F8. Press F8 to bring up the advanced

options menu to select safe-mode etc.

If you’re asking about /booting/ from the CD to do a repair-install, you press

any key (space is good) when you see the prompt at the bottom of the screen. It

should give you a few seconds.

I doubt that this is what Richard is asking about. Note that he said he

has his "copy of Windows XP in the CD ROM drive."

That's probably it.

To Richard:

In case you do want to perform a repair install but your PC is not

booting off the CD drive, you need to enter the BIOS to configure your

PC to boot off your CD drive rather than off the hard drive. If you saw

Rich's post, his link contains another link that answers your question:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

And again, here is the link for repair install instructions:

In the future, please refrain from posting in all caps. Not only is

"shouting" considered rude, but it is difficult to read. Please use

mixed-case.

Also, posting your unmunged e-mail address will undoubtedly result in

more spam arriving in your inbox. Finally, since this is Usenet, answers

should appear in this thread, so you shouldn't be asking for private

replies in the first place. This has the added benefit that others who

have similar issues will be able to see the solutions, too.

He also asked which function key to use, hence both interpretations.

Hopefully he takes a look here for answers instead of his email.

Very often, an F-key is necessary to access the BIOS. He already put his

disk in the drive and he said he wants to "repair Windows." So I'm

ninety-five percent sure OP is referring to how to make it possible to

boot off the CD-ROM drive.

But I've been wrong many times in the past. :-)

Agreed. He's using Microsoft's godawful Web interface, so that's not a

great sign. :-(
