Armageddon Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 hello Kai basically the answer is no for using a external drive as a replacement for your internal unless you plan on taking the external out of its housing and using it as a internal then it depends if the fittings are correct. Replacing a drive isn't such a hard job on a desktop am sure myself or many of the folks here would be willing to help having said all this you can use a external drive as your main drive for a linux based operating system just not a windows one. KenB Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS As Dave says - there really isn't a problem replacing the hard drive. Let us know the make and model number of your machine and we may be able to find a few pictures to help. You do realise that if you put in a new hard drive you will need to install an Operating System on it ?- unless this is a secondary drive. There may also be a way to get your data off the drive if you need to. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! markcarr Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 You can take some hard drives out of there case and re-use them in the computer, but the chances are you wont have a compatible one. Its very simple to install a new hard drive, and load the OS on. If you need any help I can guide you through it on SKYPE or over the phone. Don't pay more that £50 for a new hard drive though and make sure it compatible with your bios / motherboard settings. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Hi all, Good of you to offer the advice Mark, but please try to keep it on forum, or if you do go through skype or phone, please relate what was done in this thread, this is mainly so others coming along later may get some useful information to their benefit. markedwardcarr Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I understand your concerns, but it's not always possible to help people just on the forums. Beginners need more direct help. Skype through a mobile is safe, and I can also show them how to resolve the issue. Quote
