nothing to display

last week i bought a wee system from aria, a Fujitsu Esprimo E5915 SF which has a dvi-d graphics card as standard.

 

i obtained a dvi-d to hdmi cable and connected it to my panasonic tx-p42s30b plasma tv hoping that i could watch videos on my tv from my pc.

i switched on the pc and got a single line message on the still connected monitor, more or less saying it can't display this.

 

do i have to alter settings on my pc, tv or both?

I would think perhaps both, if you right click on an open area of the monitor, do you have any options for two displays, may be in the resolution page perhaps.

If you do have the option there for two displays, can you change the resolution on number two, which will be your TV. The resolution for that may have to be higher.

You may also have to alter something on the TV for it to accept input from a computer as well.

i unplugged the hdmi cable from the plasma and the pc then displayed on the monitor ok again. i then plugged in the hdmi cable into the plasma and the pc's icons were displayed on the plasma. the whole page was too big and i could not see all icons, start button, etc. whilst this was displayed on the plasma, the pc monitor showed the windows wallpapre, minus all icons, taskbar, etc.

 

i unplugged the hdmi cable again and the monitor again was back in play. i checked as you suggested above and there was only one monitor displayed.

When you have the HDMI plugged into both;

Right click on your desktop and select "screen resolution"

You should see this.

you should get both 1 and 2 in the options. 2 being your plasma

 

Select 2, and on the "multiple display" select "duplicate these displays"

 

Once duplicated, adjust the resolution on screen 2 (TV) until you can get a good fit.

 

Once you have a reasonable resolution you can select what you want the 2nd screen for (Duplicate/extend ect)

 

Just to point out, you might not get a "perfect" fit. I don't when I use HDMI from PC to monitor, I get clipping of about 5mm on top and bottom but it works perfect on VGA, this is a "auto fit" problem with my monitor

my display is much larger still and i am not able to see "close windows", "start" tabs, etc. i tried a few different things and got it displayed as more like 4:3.

 

i also have no sound coming from my tv when playing the test video. i thought that my dvi-d to hdmi cable would have carried sound too. i'll get the video part right first then concentrate on the sound later, unless theres something handy which is not obvious to me.

 

i have ordered a cheap hdmi graphics card; a Sapphire 11166-02-20R HD 5450 1GB DDR3 PCIE HDMI. hopefully this is ok for this machine. it was well reviewed by purchasers on amazon.

how to sort your sound out

If you have a new graphics card such as the Radion HD 3450 your graphics card most likely has an audio controller onboard, this means you can output video and sound when your computer is connected to a TV with a HDMI port.

 

If you are using a DVI to HDMI adaptor you will need to use one that supports audio from the graphics card’s DVI connection as well as video.

 

If your graphics card doesn’t come with a DVI to HDMI adaptor that supports audio have a look on Ebay and search for “ATI DVI to HDMI” all the official ATI adaptors should be fine for this.

 

I can’t really provide a list of graphics cards that have an audio controller onboard but it should be listed on the graphics cards manufactures website if your particular card supports this or not.

 

Most cards in the Radion 2600, 3000 and 4000 series by Sapphire support this. In my media centre pc I’m using a Sapphire Radeon HD 3450

 

 

If you know you’re hooked up with the correct cables and adaptors lets begin!

 

Vista Users:

 

Click the Vista orb in the bottom left of the screen, then select control panel (select classic view in the top left if needed)

 

Now find sound and click on it

You should now see a list of playback devices, select Digital Output Device (HDMI) and right click on it. (depending on your graphics card and manufacturer the name could be slightly different)

 

On the right click menu select Set as Default Device.

That’s it, simple as that! The audio controller on your graphics card will be the default sound device.

You might have to select the volume control in to the system tray and ensure the volume is fully turned up.

Your sound will now be going through the HDMI cable to your TV or Receiver as well as the picture.

 

If you ever want your sound to play though your computers sound card just set it as the default device again.

 

 

Windows XP:

 

For Windows XP it’s the exact same process the menu’s are just set out slightly different. Unfortunately I don’t have a computer running Windows XP to provide screenshots of the process.

 

Click the start button, go to control panel and click switch to classic view in the top left if needed, then click on Sound and Audio Devices. You will then be presented with the Sound and Audio options for your computer, click on the Audio tab and select ATI HD Audio as the default device and click ok.

 

There you go, your sound will now be going through the HDMI cable to your TV or Receiver as well as the picture.

i will wait a few days for my new graphics card to arrive, fit it and then hopefully i have all the info above to guide me through. i'm windows 7(32), and assume the control panel set up is fairly similar to above.

i have now my new sapphire 5450 hd card and will shortly fit it.

 

i assume i will have to first remove the already fitted dvi card?

 

i'm also wondering is there anything else i should be doing in advance, (altering bios, etc)?

 

i'm being a little cautious as i have never fitted a graphics card before and just want to be safe rather than sorry.
