Guest Sunfish Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I have a headphone/mic combination (apple stereo headset) that I would like to use to make voip calls over my computer. I am not sure how though because the headset only has one plug. When I plug it into the headphone jack and try to test the mic it doesn't work. Is there anything that I can do to make it work? Thank you.

Sounds to me that you need some kind of adapter that would accept the single plug on one side and break it into separate phone and mic connections on the other. Have you looked for such a thing? -- Tim Slattery MS MVP(Shell/User) Slattery_T@bls.gov http://members.cox.net/slatteryt

Unless you can find a splitter adapter or you PC has the "combo" port, you might not be able to use this.

That means when you plug it into a 3-pole jack that one of them doesn't get connected, assuming you can even fully seat the prod into the jack. http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/resource/audio/PDA-plug.jpg http://pinouts.ru/images/nokia_3210_handsfree.gif Since you chose to omit the details of brand and model of the headset device, replies will be just as vague. If you intend to use the headset in a device other than for which it was designed, you'll need the pinout of the connectors on the plug to get an appropriate adapter that splits out the mic from the speaker connections, then you can plug the adapter into both the mic and line-out connectors on your sound card or backpanel audio jacks.
Guest Sunfish Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 RE: Headset w/mic only has one plug? Yes, it is for a mac. It came with an iphone but that person lent the set to me to see if it would work. I am running windows though so I guess the hope wasn't high in the first place. I haven't exactly looked for an adapter but I've never seen one. I thought it might be a simple driver thing. Anyway, I guess it isn't as easy as I thought. Thank you for the suggestions!

Not a problem with Windows. It's a problem with your hardware and that is totally independent of any OS installed on that host.
Guest Curt Christianson Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Re: Headset w/mic only has one plug? Hi, Ditto what smlunatick said. I have a headset in front of me that only has one plug, with a three conductor sub-mini (2.5 mm) plug. It's for hands-free use on a cordless phone. In the case with this headset, the microphone and headphone are sharing a common return (known as the sleeve of the plug). You may find the adapters you need at your local Radio Shack. Bring the headset with you so the salesperson knows what you're looking for. -- Curt http://dundats.mvps.org/ http://www.aumha.org/ http://dundats.mvps.org/AutoIt/default.aspx "Sunfish" <Sunfish@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:54F2E993-5119-4826-836D-1FECEECBAE67@microsoft.com... >I have a headphone/mic combination (apple stereo headset) that I would like > to use to make voip calls over my computer. Guest Sunfish Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Re: Headset w/mic only has one plug? I did not choose to omit details... I am running a windows XP computer, which is obvious because I am posting in this forum and to find the headset google "apple stereo headset." there is only one. It has no other ID that I know of. However thank you for your reply. I will probably end up buying "normal" headset.
