Guest ggalv Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I have two computers that are showing "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" instead of the advertisements being displayed. This is occuring in Yahoo-Sports and Yahoo-Email. This has been going on for about 5 days. Here is the troubleshooting I have tried: This occurs in both Internet Explorer and Mozilla. Have connect the ethernet cable directly from the modem to the computer. Deleted Cookies, Deleted Files and Cleared History in Internet Options. In Internet Explorer - Internet Options, I made the 4 Security Options to default and in Advanced I Restored Defaults. Obtained the latest Java software. I am using a new modem from the DSL Provider. DSL providers says that the readings are good. Have Started up in Safe Mode with Networking. Yesterday, I used a Mac Laptop several times, different bootups and the advertisement always worked in Yahoo - Sports and Yahoo - E-mail. Then I booted up my Windows XP and connected the ethernet cable once the computer was booted up. I went to Yahoo-Sports and Yahoo-Email and the advertisement worked at first. But then later on the Advertisement for Yahoo-Sports worked sometimes and other times it didn't and I couldn't get the yahoo - e-mail to work again. Right now sometimes the Adverisements in Yahoo-Sports and E-mail work and other times I get the "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" instead. Appreciate your help, in trying to figuere this out. THANKS.

THANKS. This is normal behavior if you are using a HOSTS file. I get the same thing. And I don't know about you, but I much prefer that to the advertisements! But I can't help you out with the Web-based e-mail.

Guest ggalv Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Re: "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" on certain Advertisements I have zone alarm, avg-antivirus, spywware blaster and spybot search and destroy. On one occassion I turned off zone alarm and disable protection in spyware blaster. The I booted up with "Safe Mode with Networking". And I still got "Page Cannot be Displayed" on the advertisement. Do you know what application settings I should look into? Appreciate your help. Guest ggalv Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Re: "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" on certain Advertisements Somhow, from past experience I relate "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" with the internet (DSL) not working properly - maybe a connectively problem. So, do you my computer/internet is fine even though I am getting this message? THANKS. Guest Daave Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Re: "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" on certain Advertisements If your DSL weren't working, you wouldn't be on the Internet at all! :-) Everything is fine. More than likely, a program such as Spybot Search and Destroy has created a HOSTS file located here: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc I would imagine you could use the same program that is blocking *all* such content you mentioned (mostly advertising, which is good IMO!) and tweak it to allow certain content in (such as what you need for your Web-based e-mail). Or you could manually alter the HOSTS file, using Notepad. Assuming it *is* Spybot S&D that is the program in question, here is their forum: http://forums.spybot.info/ "ggalv" <ggalv@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:509A64D7-8BC3-4F86-AB37-4F9711A5182F@microsoft.com... > Somhow, from past experience I relate "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" > with the > internet (DSL) not working properly - maybe a connectively problem. > So, do > you my computer/internet is fine even though I am getting this > message? > THANKS. > > "Daave" wrote: > >> "ggalv" <ggalv@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:73CB10BA-DEC5-41E6-B12C-5EC210E606BB@microsoft.com... >> >I have two computers that are showing "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" >> >instead >> > of the advertisements being displayed. THANKS. SpywareBlaster has a feature called Flash Killer. Do you perhaps have it enabled? And as I and others have mentioned, what you describe (instances of "Page Cannot Be Displayed") is almost surely because of your HOSTS file. Disabling Flash disables all Flash content, including certain ads. If you would like a quick way to toggle Flash on an off, try TurnFlash: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/tflash2.html Or you could try Firefox and use the FlashBlock extension: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ http://flashblock.mozdev.org/
Guest ggalv Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Re: "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" on certain Advertisements I checked my spyware blaster and the"Disable and block Macromedia Flash in Internet Explorer" is unchecked. Guest ggalv Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Re: "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" on certain Advertisements Sorry, If you think my questions are not appropriate - I am just coming here for support for some problems that I have been trying to figuere out. While working with my DSL provider they had me put my system in Safe Mode with Networking - From what they told me I thought this would disable ZoneAlarm, AVG, Spyware Blaster and Spybot. I was just trying to find a solution. Sorry for any inconvenience. That's one thing eliminated. Still, one of your other programs might be blocking Falsh content. Or perhaps you never correctly installed Flash to begin with. You had earlier written: > One thing that I noticed was that Adobe Flash Player was available > to install, but did not installed it yet. If you haven't installed Flash, you won't be able to see Flash content! Assuming none of your other programs is blocking Falsh content, you might be better off uninstalling Flash (if indeed it was ever installed) and installing it fresh.
Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Re: "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" on certain Advertisements SpywareBlaster's Protections and Spybot's Immunizations are NOT disabled in Safe Mode. The fact that the ads are not displaying has nothing whatsoever to do with your ISP. -- ~PA Bear ggalv wrote: > Sorry, If you think my questions are not appropriate - I am just coming > here > for support for some problems that I have been trying to figuere out. > While > working with my DSL provider they had me put my system in Safe Mode with > Networking - From what they told me I thought this would disable > ZoneAlarm, > AVG, Spyware Blaster and Spybot.
