Hi,

first post on a new forum.

Whilst doing a bit of research for a different ISP, I saw that my download speed should be around 8mbs for my location and my telephone line.

I am currently paying for an "Upto 8 mbs download speed connection" .I checked the speed and got around 0.9 mbs DL and 0.3 UL speeds. This is with an Ethernet cable connection to the Modem/Router.

My friend logged onto the internet with his laptop, using WiFi on the same modem/router and completed the same speed test. His results were 7.5mbs DL and 2 mbs UL

Shock Horror !!!

My PC is a 9 year old Dell Inspiron with 1.25gb RAM Intel Pentium processor. His laptop was about 3 months old.

Are these much slower speeds due to the age of my PC or is there something not right.

My PC works fine, never any problems, I am quite happy there is no malware on it, as I never get anything which arouses suspicions.Full detailed scans completed with Avast and Malwarebytes AntiMalware with nothing found.

If I need to add any further info I can do.

I will watch closely and respond quickly if anyone can offer help.

Thank you.

Unfortunately not, although I will get one from somewhere, however I can say that 2 months ago, the transformer powering the modem failed and I had to replace it. The whole deal was replaced, modem transformer and all the cabling.

The speeds before and after this modem change were no different.

The d/l speed is usually better via cable than wireless - so swapping this is an obvious place to start.

I assume that you have tried a different connection on the router ( if there is one ) ?

Have you tried switching the router off for 30 seconds then back on again ?

Yes understand. I have always used cable not WiFi as the PC is desktop.

There are 4 connections on the router and I have used all 4, speedtest still the same.

Have re-booted the router a few times, no difference, and in fact it was off all last night.

Attachged (hopefully) is a screenshot of the speed shown on the diagnostic for the router

Montant is upload, descendant is download

I speak a little French but thanks for this :)

10270 = 10Mb/s

Please run the speed test from here and let me have the results

http://www.speedtest.net/

Be careful not to click on any "Scan Now" or "Download Now" buttons.

The Speed Test will show "Begin Test".

This confirms your test result. That is very poor.

We need to check it with a different ethernet cable first - can you borrow one ?

Alternatively - use the ethernet cable to connect the laptop to the router.

There should be a switch on the laptop to turn off wireless.

Let me know the make and model number of your router please.

Try this:

Go to Device Manager again > right click on the Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection > Properties > Advanced

Click on Link Speed / Duplex Mode

There are various options here.

Mine is set to "Auto Negotiation"

Try this and try 100Mb/s Full Duplex and 100Mb/s Half Duplex. Click OK after each change.

It wouldn't do any harm to try the others too.

If this doesn't solve your problem put the setting back to what it was.

I suspect the problem lies with the Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Card

Right click on this ( in Device Manager ) > Properties > and Update Drivers.

Let the system search automatically.

If this doesn't solve the problem ....

I suggest buying either another NIC card or a USB wireless adapter

and here

The wireless adapters and NIC cards are not expensive and may solve your problem.

Hi KenB,

thanks for all your efforts ........... I have found some interesting comments on the Intel website. I have tried also to update the driver, it would appear that there is one available, however the problem is I cannot uninstall the old one. According to Intel it may be corrupt registry entries that are causing this ......... the next stage may be to manually delete some entries, but I'll have to think hard before I attempt that !!!

I will update this thread with whatever I sort out as I have found in the past that anytime someone solves a problem it is of help to those following.

Interestingly, comparrison of the wifi dongle prices in UK and France from Amazon is quite enlightening.Same piece of kit 25 Euro and £5 ............ who's making the profit!!!

Same piece of kit 25 Euro and £5 .

And we always thought we were being ripped off !

Can you order it from the UK and get it shipped ?

I cannot uninstall the old one.

Download Revo Uninstaller from here: Scroll Down the page - you want the free version.

You may want to download and save the drivers to your desktop first.

Install and run it.

It will list all software - including the adapter drivers.

Highlight the drivers. Click "Uninstall" from the toolbar and when prompted select "Advanced"

This will remove all trace - even from the registry.

A friend in IT looked at it........... all I know is it was something to do with DNS cache failing to empty.

Screenshot shows speed difference

Thanks also from Me Janeygee, you are quite correct, indeed wherever possible we encourage folks to give us feedback when the problem is solved.

Whether from our help or as in your case outside help, as it does indeed help others coming along afterwards. (Also serves as a reminder to us for the next time, too:D)
