Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3: http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/950717 WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx Release Notes for Windows XP Service Pack 3 http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/8/cd8cc719-7d5a-40d3-a802-e4057aa8c631/relnotes.htm Download Windows XP Service Pack 3 here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en Free unlimited installation and compatibility support for Service Pack 3: http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gpr -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA
Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Re: service pack update for win XP You can skip straight to SP3. 1. Download & save to your desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4 2. Read & heed: http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx 3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file to install WinXP SP3*. Follow all prompts, be patient, and reboot *twice*. 4. Do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 5. Go to Windows Update | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical security updates offered. Again, follow all prompts. [i do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.] 6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525 Addtional References: Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3" Protect Your PC! http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/computer/default.mspx Learn how to protect your PC by taking three simple steps http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3AD23728-4973-4DA5-9836-602954130D38 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ KillerDesigns wrote: > hi, > > i had to reinstall win-xp due to memory (ram) failure, as all the files > became corrrupted. now, that i have reinstalled win-xp, i need to update > it > sp-x? fixes. i have already installed sp1. do I need to install sp2 then > sp3 or > can i jump to > sp3 and forget about sp2? also, can i download these, sp2/3 from > microsoft.com website? > > thanks for reply/s. > > s
