Guest ytlondon Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I have had to reinstall Windows XP home edition to my computer and now I am not able to connect via a wired connection to my Boradband? Help please?
Guest R. McCarty Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Re: unable to connect wired internet after reinstallling Windows XP First verify that your ISP connection is working. Usually most modems have a Activity LED that indicates data traffic. Then open a CMD prompt window and enter IPConfig. The returned vales should indicate if the DHCP is assigning the proper address. If the IP Address begins with 169.x.x.x then the PC is getting an AutoConfig address that will not work for Internet connectivity. By default the NIC should be setup for automatic configuration but you should check that it isn't setup to use Static IP addressing. After you reinstalled Windows, did you then install all the drivers for your hardware? This would include drives for your network adapter. See below for general drivers information. Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from: 1. The device mftr.'s website; OR 2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR 3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.). Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers. To find out what hardware is in your computer: 1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer. 2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway) 3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc Advisor or System Information for Windows. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor http://www.gtopala.com/ - System Information for Windows Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
