Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

OK I mean do this on the present external monitor.

Right click on a spare space on the screen, choose properties, then the tab "Settings" in that window it should show the two screens, numbered 1 and 2. At the moment 2 should be the one in use. Click on the number 1 screen, can you now place a tick in the box for "Use this device as the primary monitor"?

Hi

This doesn't solve your initial problem - but it is a work-around ( hopefully )

Fn + one of the "F" keys should toggle your screen from monitor to laptop.

There will be 2 blue monitors on the key. mine is F5

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
