Guest Andrew Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Whilst using Task Manager to check recently installed AVG has finished loading, I've noticed my PC has six svchost.exe displayed which are: 3 SYSTEM svchost.exe (20,644k, 4,628k & 4,068k), 1 - LOCAL SERVICE svchost.exe (4,228k) and 2 - NETWORK SERVICE svchost.exe (5,608k & 4,120k). Is there any way I can check the ones that are NOT needed please? - Thanks - Andy

Guest JS Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Re: Task Manger reveals 6 svchost! 6 is about normal and most likely all a needed. If you want to see what svchost process is for: try using Process Explorer: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx Once you have Process Explorer installed and running: In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and the 'Show Lower Pane' options. (This will provide some of the detailed info you may need) Next expand the Process tree until 'Services.exe' has been expanded. Next move the mouse cursor over the Svchost.exe process that you are interested in. Or expand the Svchost entry if you see a + sign to the left of Svchost entry. (You should now see a pop up with a list of services associated with the Svchost.exe you selected) Next double click on the Svchost.exe process that you are interested in. The 'Properties' Window should now be displayed with numerous tabs available. (Two important tabs to look at are: Services and Environment) JS http://www.pagestart.com "Andrew" <Andrew@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:75F576BF-8C18-4945-8169-C57BF2271F6D@microsoft.com... > > Whilst using Task Manager to check recently installed AVG has finished > loading, I've noticed my PC has six svchost.exe displayed which are: 3 > SYSTEM svchost.exe (20,644k, 4,628k & 4,068k), 1 - LOCAL SERVICE > svchost.exe (4,228k) and 2 - NETWORK SERVICE svchost.exe (5,608k & > 4,120k).
