WindowsXP 64-bit new install: any tricks?

Recommended Posts

I am building a system for my daughter, who is a design student and

"needs" a system to run her CAD programs. I am told that her instructors

urge that the system run WindowsXP 64-bit.

I have done a number of installs of the 32-bit version; are there any

tricks to installing the 64-bit version (other than checking to be sure

that drivers are available for devices)? are there any websites that

may be helpful?

Thanks

Well, you need a motherboard that supports 64-bit operation.

Most likely you will need to buy a new one. The advantage to

64-bit is that it can utilize more than 4gigs of ram, which

means there are fewer disk writes because of more ram. Also

the MB must have enough slots to support the memory modules

and that is not a given, you have to check on it. For instance,

installing 8gigs of memory in only 2 available slots is costly.

Also Photoshop CS4 will enter the market in a few months and

though it may run on Windows XP 64, only Vista 64 is supported.

Thanks for the reply. I have chosen a mb that will handle 8GB of RAM

(ASUS P5K WS) and there are drivers for the video card. Glad for the

heads up about Photoshop CS4-I will let her know. She has specified that

she absolutely doesn't want to run Vista of any flavor...!

You should be posting to microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general where you

will find more users familiar with this OS than here.
