tismehi Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 i have a pc with an 80gb sata hdd. i also have a spare 160gb ide hdd and a sata to ide converter cable, which i intend to fit. i'm fairly ok with the fitting, connecting, etc but no little about jumpers, master, slave, etc. is there an ideal way to set this up, or a right and wrong way? KenB Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Hi, When you add the SATA converter to the IDE drive effectively it is now a SATA drive. SATA drives do not have jumpers - so you can leave the jumper set to "Master" if this is where it is at the moment. If I understand you correctly what you have is a converter cable that connects to your spare IDE drive so that you can connect it to a SATA port on your mobo. If this is correct I believe that your IDE will now behave as a SATA. If so there is no need to master/slave the drives. It should just read as an extra drive much like a USB stick or CD/DVD drive. Of course you still need to power it. My computer has a SATA drive and I can plug in extra SATA drives to the MOBO. What is funny is that I have no extra SATA power connectors but pleny of regular Molex power connectors. Of course this is no real issue as all I would need is a Molex to SATA converter power connector which is cheap. I have not done this as I opted for an external drive. Also you can get SATA drives pretty cheap for desktops these days. If I'm wrong I have no doubt I will be corrected shortly. :) Quote We are all members helping other members. tismehi Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 thanks guys. that has answered me perfectly well. the video is particurlarly helpful. i think the converter "thingy" i got from ebay ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200718146680?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649) has the power connectors for ide to sata and vice versa. hopefully it works. i was going to use the drive in a caddy via usb but then thats another thing to be powered up and i already have enough cables running around the place. also the converter adapter was much cheaper than a caddy. cheers again.
