First - Look at msdos.sys in the *root* of the drive, it must not be hidden, and check for AutoScan=1, if not there change read only attribute and modify to include that line. Reset the file to hidden and read only. If you can't find the file, go to Folder Options > View > and make sure Show All Files is ticked, and Hide file extension for known file types is not checked. This isn't a multiple OS system is it? -- MEB a Peoples' counsel -- _________
Guest Dan Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 RE: No Scandisk after a crash? Yes, 1. Press Start and run and type msconfig and run the program. You should be in the general tab and click the advanced properties and see if the box "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown" is checked and if it is then uncheck it and okay and restart when asked and then scandisk should run when you have a bad shutdown and restart. Guest PCR Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Re: No Scandisk after a crash? Fan924 wrote: | My recent Installation of Win98 never runs Scandisk after a crash. | Ideas? (1) Do you have a "Scandisk.alt"? Then, Norton took over Scandisk. So, look inside of it & in Norton menus/Norton FAQs/Norton Readme for an answer. I do know: When Norton has been uninstalled & Scandisk auto-Scandisk doesn't work, Glee will say to delete that file! (But that's when it's been uninstalled.) (2) As Blanton has said, Scandisk will not necessarily run. It depends whether a write was pending at the time of the crash. If you do crash, it is always wise to run your own Scandisk, anyhow, as the auto-Scandisk is too quick to be doing it all. JUST... don't let yours constantly restart! (3) Look in "C:\Scandisk.log" to see what it may say. Colorado was getting messages in there, even when it seemed the thing was not running! (4) Open "C:\Windows\Command\Scandisk.ini" in Notepad, & change "NumPasses=0" to a positive number. Mine is "=5". (However, if Norton has taken you over, perhaps look in "Scandisk.alt" for that.) (5) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q118579/ Contents of the Windows MSDOS.sys File Careful with MS-DOS.sys: It is an important file. (a) "START button, Settings, Folder Options, View tab". Bolt "Show all files" & UNcheck "Hide file extensions..." (b) R-Clk "C:\MSDOS.sys" in Explorer, select Properties, & turn off "Read-Only" © Open "C:\MSDOS.sys" in Notepad. If it shows "AutoScan=0", change that to "=1". (The line may be at bottom, after the filler "X's".) (b) R-Clk "C:\MSDOS.sys" in Explorer, select Properties, & turn "Read-Only" back on. This setting probably is equivalent to all that (but it may get out-of-synch)... (a) "START button, Run, MSConfig, General tab, Advanced button" (b) Uncheck "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown". (6) As cquirke often has said, "C:\Winboot.ini", if it exists, will override MSDOS.sys. So, check for a "AutoScan=0" in there as well, as it has the same format as the other. (7) Here's an interesting Registry key. Not sure what I'd have you do with it, though. PROBABLY, you DO want to see "SCANDSKW.EXE" in there. Also, if all else fails, speak to it by it's friendly name. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Plus!\System Agent\SAGE\Scandisk for Windows] "Settings"=hex:01 "Program"="SCANDSKW.EXE" "Friendly Name"="ScanDisk for Windows" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Plus!\System Agent\SAGE\Scandisk for Windows\Result Codes] "Success"="1" "0"="No errors found" "1"="Errors found and all were fixed" "249"="One or more drives could not be checked" "250"="Drive could not be checked - could not load or find DSKMAINT.DLL" "251"="Drive could not be checked - insufficient memory" "252"="Errors were found and some were not fixed" "254"="Check was canceled" "255"="Check was stopped because of an error" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Plus!\System Agent\SAGE\Scandisk for Windows\Set0] "Settings"=hex:a1,03,40,00 "DrivesToCheck"=hex:04,00,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Plus!\System Agent\SAGE\Scandisk for Windows\Set1] "Settings"=hex:a1,03,40,00 "DrivesToCheck"=hex:00,00,00,80 -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, Should things get worse after this, PCR pcrrcp@netzero.net
Guest Fan924 Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Re: No Scandisk after a crash? Thanks guys. I checked and it was as it should be. Other things started going south too. Reinstalling windows just seems to piss it off more. So I am reformatting and starting fresh.
