Guest Smirnoff Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 AVG 8 seemed to have gone a bit Italian on me. The annoying information bar at the bottom (which you can only hide after it opens with the interface) was advertising some game called Shark Shooter and it was in Italian! It updated itself today in the normal way. Has AVG itself become a victim of some spammer/hacker? Chose to update again and was told no updates were available. Closed it and re-opened and this time there is the normal option to upgrade to Internet security.
Guest R. McCarty Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Re: AVG 8 Seems unlikely. You may have had another pop-up notification run that wasn't actually the AVG task bar status. However, that type of thing is an indication of an unwanted process. A quick web search doesn't match AVG/Shark Shooter offers, so I'd suspect your PC has some Malware on it. Along with Windows Defender, I still have confidence in SpyBot 1.6 as a good detection/removal tool. It may be a good idea to run a couple of alternate on-line scans to verify the PC is mostly clean. The only issue with Spybot 1.6 is that it will by default install the Tea Timer function which I generally uncheck. Guest RJK Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Re: AVG 8 the situation may have changed but, AVG 8.0 (a couple of months ago at least), was detecting several registry keys inserted by Spybot S&D installation, to thwart several specific strains of malware, ...I suppose you could consider those "false positives." Not wishing to fiddle around with that scenario, I discontinued using Spybot S&D ...which was a little disappointing seeing as I donated a little money to it ! regards, Richard "R. Guest R. McCarty Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Re: AVG 8 I had actually ceased using both AdAware and Spybot because of the operation of their latest releases. I'm still not convinced that AdAware is a good choice in it's latest configuration. Spybot still has issues ( I don't like the download function as a separate window ), but it still finds a lot of junk that users tend to end up with. I've tried a few other products ( Super Antispyware...) and haven't come up with alternate choices that give good coverage while not gumming up the PC. It's a pain to deal with these "Anti-Cocktails" of various apps to keep a PC Malware free. Guest Smirnoff Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Re: AVG 8 AVG updated itself approx 6.00am this morning. As it was MS update time, I installed all updates and then updated and ran: SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware, SpyBot S&D, SpywareBlaster (just updated this), CA Yahoo Antispy, CCleaner, EasyCleaner. Windows Defender ran at 11.00am. None of these reported any problems. This was not a separate pop up but appeared as normal in the AVG Hide/Show Notification window. Have reported this in AVG forum: http://freeforum.avg.com/list.php?12 "R. McCarty" <PcEngWork-NoSpam_@mindspring.com> wrote in message news:#vjv4$yEJHA.680@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > Seems unlikely. Guest ju.c Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Re: AVG 8 I hate the pop-up ads so I played around and found out how to stop them! In the main Avira folder, rename: avnotify.exe to avnotify.exe.bak and avnotify.dll to avnotify.dll.bak and create replacements: Just create two empty, zero byte, text files and name them avnotify.exe and avnotify.dll No more ads!
