Guest Eddy Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 My PC is working normally, no viruses, etc, and System Restore checkpoints are created every day or two, sometimes more often if I install new software or after windows updates. I do not use System Restore very often, but on each occasion I have tried it has always failed to work. Today I installed something (a reputable trial program, not some iffy freeware) that did not seem to uninstall correctly, so I thought I would just restore to yesterdays checkpoint. However, after the usual reboot it just says it cannot restore to that checkpoint and nothing has been changed. I tried the previous days checkpoint. Same thing. And so on for 5 previous restore points. If I create a new checkpoint and immediately restored to it, it works ok, but trying to use a checkpoint a day or more old always seems to fail. Why? It does seem rather pointless if it is unusable for the very purpose it was designed for. In the past I tried disabling SR (clearing out all restore points), and then starting again with it, but it makes no difference. Anyone know what I can do to get System Restore to reliably do what it is supposed to do? Eddy.
Guest Gerry Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Re: System Restore will not restore! Eddy What are your anti-virus arrangements. These type of programmes can prevent changes to the registry , which using System Restore does. http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html The problem goes beyond Norton who were one of the first to create this problem. -- Hope this helps. Guest Gerry Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Re: System Restore will not restore! Eddy AVG 7.5 (free version) will not cause a problem, except it is no longer supported and you should update to AVG 8 (free version). What anti-spyware and firewall are you using? -- Hope this helps. My firewall is Comodo 3, and anti-spyware is Spyware Terminator. Eddy.
Guest Gerry Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Re: System Restore will not restore! Eddy I am not familiar with either. You may need to turn off Spyware Terminator Real Time Protection for System Restore to work. http://www.spywareterminator.com/support/help.aspx?faqid=1269&faqmod=HELP_SpyTerm_ST You could ask in their Forum. http://forum.spywareterminator.com/ Another link which may of interest: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f3/could-spyware-terminator-stopping-system-restore-245248/ With regard to Commodo there could well be a problem. There is a lot of talk but it is not easy to disseminate informed from uninformed comment: http://snipurl.com/3ph7k [www_google_com] -- Hope this helps.
