virtualization. which performance counters?

I've virtualized a w2003 for testing purposes (vmware server on debian on

ibm x206).

I noticed a gread performance loss, and I suspect this loss is related to

disk virtualization.

I'd like to do some performances test, but I'm not very experienced with

perf. counters.

Which counters should I activate? Is anywhere some good doc?
