supermosiman Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Reformatted my son's pc as it was incredibly slow, with system restore disc, windows xp. The ethernet connection is 'live' in the back of the pc, green led lit, and the modem sees the computer. I have been to 'connections' in internet tools, selected 'automatically detect settings' in LAN settings, but nothing happens and nothing changes when I click ok. I'm sure I'm only a couple of mouse clicks away, I just don't know what they are.... Quote

supermosiman Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 Have you updated or installed the eithernet ports driver and software and have you activated XP? No I haven't, and I guess that's the problem....I have no clue how to, and have no software for the ethernet port. What do you mean by 'activated xp'? Thanks for your help! Quote
Jelly Bean Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 When you reformat XP with a genuine COA key, either during the reformat you input the COA key, this is the sticker on the back or side of a computer with letters and numbers on. Or when you logon to XP you will get a popup saying activate windows now.... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307890 You need to download drivers and software from the laptops makers website under there support tab.... supermosiman Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 It's a pc, the ethernet is built in to the motherboard....I see there is a code sticker on the back of the pc, but it was not asked for during the reformat. Quote

Plastic Nev Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Just to add, if the reformat and install of XP was done using the manufacturers recovery disks, activating XP again is usually not necessary. Hence no pop up windows asking for it, which you normally get when the computer is new. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
