Need a little help,

Environment Windows 2003 server

Raid 1 run on Disk 0 & 1 = C: drive

Raid 1 run on Disk 2 & 3 = D: drive

Getting message that Disk 2 is going bad.

Now the question if disk 2 goes bad will it automatically read disk 3?

I want to replace disk 2 how do I go about it. here is what I think

1) break mirror

2) put in new disk

3) recreate mirror with disk 3

Is this correct? or do I first have to do something to point to disk 3? and

then create the mirror?

Want to replace the HD before it goes bad.

thanks

Your steps 1..3 are correct.

An overall observation: While it is a good idea to protect your show with

mirrored disks, RAID arrays and backups, these measures are worth very

little unless they are fully tested at setup time. Installing a mirror and

hoping for the best, without performing a full test right there and then,

can leave you badly exposed.

Thanks for your answer but first question. DO I JUST remove the back HD?

Re: New Mirror

Presumably you expect me to expand on your own recipe. If so then here it

is:

1) break mirror

2. remove disk

3) put in new disk

4) recreate mirror with disk 3

You probably have software that works with the RAID controller.

Depending upon your hardware, software and whether you have a

hot spare, you will want to do the following; (I had the same problem

last week with my Dell server and this is what I did)

1. Make sure you have a good backup. Preferably two if it is a

tape backup.

2. Mark the bad disk "Off-Line" (using RAID controller software)

3. Unmount the disk (removes power to the drive)

4. Remove Disk

5. Insert New disk of the same or greater size and speed.

6. Controller should start the rebuild on its own.

Server performance will be slow until the rebuild is complete.

If have room in your server for a hot spare, buy and extra disk,

install it and use it as a global hot spare.
