Disciplined Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Hello people, this is the first time I'm using this website :D. I'm looking to get a graphics card for my little brothers desktop pc for high end gaming and I'm interested in the following video card: EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti FBP Video Card - 1 GB, GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0 (x16). (Copied the above graphics card information from the TigerDirect website). I don't know whether it will be compatible with his desktop (haven't built a pc in 5 years). I was hoping someone could help me out. Here is his desktop information from PC Wizard: Manufacturer: Gateway Model: DX4860 Mainboard : Gateway IPISB-VR Chipset : Intel H67 Processor : Intel Core i3 2120 @ 3300MHz Number of Core : 2 Support : Socket 1155 LGA Cache L1 : 2 x 64KB Cache L2 : 2 x 256KB Cache L3 : 3072KB Physical Memory : 4096MB (2 x 2048 DDR3-SDRAM ) Video Card : Intel® HD Graphics Family Hard Disk : Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 (1000GB) Operating System : Windows 7 Home Premium Home Edition Service Pack 1 (64-bit) DirectX : Version 11.00 Bios : American Megatrends Inc. Power Supply: 300 W LPC bus : Yes PCI Bus : Yes Bus PCI-Express : Yes USB Bus : Yes SMBus/i2c Bus : Yes Bus HyperTransport : No Bus QPI : No Bus CardBus : No Bus FireWire : No I hope this was enough information provided. I know that I'll probably have to upgrade the power supply since that graphics card requires a min 400 W PSU. However all I want to know is whether this pc is compatible with the graphics card. Thank you :D Quote
KenB Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS I found these specs: http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/gateway-dx-4860-ur20p/4507-3118_7-34747181.html If this is your machine - I was looking for PCIe 2.0 x 16 in the Expansion Slots available. It is not listed. ?? With 6 / 8 GB RAM I would have thought that the motherboard would have at least one PCIe 2.0 x 16 slot. Does your motherboard have one? http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/attachments/video-cards/5973d1244135398-tv-card-looks-wrong-pci-express-x16-slot-pci-slots.jpg Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Disciplined Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 Hi KenB, sorry, unfortunately that's not my machine. As you can see from the specs I have provided, I have an Intel i3. Not an Intel i5 (from the link you gave). Here is a link from the official manufacturer about my desktop machine: http://ca.gateway.com/gw/en/CA/content/model/PT.GCPP2.019 Quote
Jelly Bean Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I cannot see what slots it has either KenB... Although I do see it only has a 300 watt PSU... I think you would need to buy a new Power Supply to as well as a graphics card.... Personaly I would go for a 500 watt PSU to allow for future upgrades... Disciplined Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 Yes as I've mentioned at the bottom of my question, I will indeed have to upgrade my PSU. However I still don't know whether the new graphics card is compatible with my pc. Quote
KenB Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 As J-B says - still no mention of the PCIe 2.0 x 16 slot. I gave you a pic in my last post - take a look inside and let us know if the slot exists. Disciplined Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 Hey KenB, here's a picture of my mother board I'm not sure if its PCIe 2.0 x16. Quote
KenB Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Hi, The slot I have put in a red box ( see attachment ) is the PCIe 2.0 slot that your video card would fit into. As already mentioned - your PSU would need upgrading to provide the power needed by your new Video Card. Disciplined Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Thank you very much Ken! Are you sure its a PCI-E 2.0 16x ? :D Hopefully it will fit inside  Quote
KenB Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Hi, As sure as I can be :) If you look at my labelled pic they are the same. Next to yours is a PCIe x1 ( small slot ) which is shown on my labelled pic also. They are usually next to each other. Disciplined Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 :D I'm going to buy the graphics card and a new Power Supply Unit this weekend then. You're awesome Ken. Thank you! Quote
Disciplined Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 Hey Ken, one quick question. Can my slot support PCI-Express 2.1 (x16) graphics cards? Quote
KenB Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Hi, I was assuming that the slot was 2.0 it may well be 2.1. I cannot find any specific specs for the motherboard but PCIe 2.1 is backwards compatible with 2.0 So yes - it will work.
