Guest M Shafaat Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Hi, I run Win XP Pro SP2. After the automatic Win XP SP3 update failed, I tried in all the 3 ways instructed by Microsoft to redo it without success. I get the error message "Access is denied" after all tries . The same thing happened with my laptop. So it seems that this is a very common issue affecting many people. This has also caused my LAN no to function well. By restarting both the modem and router, I coul come out to the Internet, BUT still the other machines on the LAN cannot read the content in my machine and this is very important for me. Please help with both these issues. Regards M Shafaat

Guest M Shafaat Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Re: Win XP SP3 fails to install and causes LAN to malfunction Hi, If you mean that my Windows has an illegal licence, it's wrong. If so, the automatic update would not work in other cases, while it functions always very well usually. Besides, if I am "using an account that does not have rights to update to SP3", why does Windows Update suggests and tries to install SP3 on my computer? I am sure that this issue is very common because MS has done a insufficient work with SP3. One consequence of this is that I have to close the Windows Automatic Update, so that even other good and needed updates will be closed off, in some cases with security issues. No, I mean that if you are not using an account that has Administrator rights, it will fail with that message. - Thee Chicago Wolf
Guest M Shafaat Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Re: Win XP SP3 fails to install and causes LAN to malfunction OK, I understand. But I use an account with administrative rights for doing this. Well, some may disagree with it but you can run the installer (as the Admin account) in safe mode and see if it complains about rights. Sometimes it doesn't matter if an account has admin privileges, The Admin account *should* be the one doing the install. - Thee Chicago Wolf
