Being it is September 2008, what would be the best anti-virus

program/version for Windows ME?

Thanks in advance!

AVG 7.5 is still running and regularly updating on my WinMe boxes, without

any nag screens. No sign though, for how much longer.

I have Avast! on my ME. Regular updates and its FREE. You do have to register

with website every year. Only detract is popup that lets you know it has

updated.

Re: Antivirus

Avast... 2 out of 3. Will do.

Mart - I want to reinstall AVG, but I do not think it is a wise decision,

because they just do not care about us Windows MEers no more like so many

others. :-(

Anymore input is always welcome.

This group is great!

Thanks all. :-)

Whew!

This program is so not easy for the organ within my cranium to understand.

I think I need new eyeglasses, too. I wore mine out straining through all

those options.

Still do not have the thing configured right I am thinking.

Oh, I need to stop thinking. It hurts to think.

Re: Antivirus

SGB: configure it to your liking.

Your persistence will pay off in the end, you'll see.

In my book it's the best one for WinME. The pop-up is a good thing and the

yearly registration no bother either. It did disable auto System CheckPoints

for SR in my case, but I do them manually instead.

Once everything is in place, you will be pleased, I'm sure.

Best of luck,

Harry.

Don't quite follow your reasoning here. As I mentioned earlier my (Free) AVG

7.5 copies update themselves (latest definitions) every day (or at least

every day I fire my WinMe boxes up) and there are no warnings or pop-ups

that AVG is going to suspend their updates in the near future. Also their

'free' support remains, therefore I can't agree that "they just do not care

about us Windows MEers no more". So until - or unless - they do, I'm

sticking with AVG 7.5 Free.

AVG 8 is a different kettle of fish, though. Apart from it not being WinMe

compatible, it's somewhat bloated.

Does Avira AntiVir (free) work with ME? I don't have a spare ME box (not

MSFN has a list of software that works for 98SE that is updated every two or

three months. As of August 31, 2008, Avira Antivir Personal Edition Classic

v. 7.06.00268 is the last that still works with 98SE and ME.

Version 8.1.0.331 released this year lists only 2000/XP/Vista as supported OS

Crappy 'cause Avira's been ranking VERY high in the AV Comparatives for a

while now. High enough to the point where it is worth considering if/when

you can.

AHHHHHH......

This program is an anti-virus, but the thing is an anti-christ.

It demonized my computer.

Sucked the life from my icons.

Then, sucked the life from my computer.

Uninstalled from my system.

Took many deep breathing exercises and many reboots to get my computer to

come back to life.

A VAST HEADACHE for little ol' me.

Will try AVG. Okay, Mart... you win. LOL

Gotta love this group though.

You all still rock!

Thanks, I think.

Since I uninstalled Avast from my system, SR will NOT stay enabled.

Re: Antivirus

OK, so that's not the problem. Try clearing the SR archive and rebuilding

the SR control files.

Disable SR using System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and

check "Disable System Restore",

IMMEDIATELY Reboot

Enable SR using System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and

UNcheck "Disable System Restore",

Reboot

Is SR still enabled? Do you see a checkpoint?

Now carry out the following quick test:

1) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file (any file).

2) Create a manual checkpoint

Could you create a checkpoint?

3) Delete the shortcut

4) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.

Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?

5) Reboot your PC

Was the checkpoint retained?

Using System Properties in the Control Panel, hit Performance then File

System then Troubleshooting and make sure Disable System Restore is cleared.

Hi Joan, - something about 'if it ain't broke' I guess <g>

But to be fair, I've nothing against Avast. It's just that I've never had

reason to use it. I know Alias always recommends it, and probably

justifiably so, but AVG (7.xx) had always done well on my WinMe boxes and as

I said elsewhere, I have no reason (yet) to pull it.

Like you it's the one that's been on that box for ages and it still gets

updated and as that machine is perhaps only turned on about once a week to

keep it up to date, I have no need to change it.

Johns XP has the free version of Avast, it was my machine and I had NOD32

on there but took it back when I got Vista as I still had nearly a year

left, he can't have all the perks <g>
