KenB Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Hi, On the home pc Connect the external drive Start > type in ......diskmgmt.msc .............ENTER Is the drive recognised in disk-management ? Do other USB devices work when you plug them in? ( especially a memory stick ) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Plastic Nev Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Just to add, we have seen this fairly recently with another member, it turned out to be low voltage from the power supply, therefore not providing enough power for an external USB powered drive on the problem computer. Answer Kens questions first regarding the Disk management and if it is recognised there, and also if other USB devices function OK. If no real results in that direction can you let us know what make and model the home Windows 7 computer is, and if known, the size of its power supply. Just so we can check the voltages, download and install the free version of Speccy from here= http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download Don't go for the paid for versions as the free will give us the information we need. Once installed and open, click on "Motherboard" it is what is showing in Voltages we are interested in, copy and paste that here please. Plug in the external drive and if any voltage changes let us know that as well, thanks. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. sartranew Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 Sorry for the delay in replying back to you. I got home last night and removed all the usb connections including my mouse, i plugged the hard drive into the pc, turn on the power and it detected it straight away. Im not sure if i activated something at work, or it was removing the usbs, but now i am able to use it any of the ports. Thankyou for your help! Quote

You are very welcome :) Not sure why doing what you did should solve the problem - but it doesn't matter - you got it sorted ........well done.
