Guest Steve L. Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 I can no longer customize the icons. When I click the drop down to select "Never Show" or another change, nothing happens. I don't get the dropdown enabling me to select a different display of any of the icons. Windows XP Service Pack 3 Any fix? Thanks, Steve L.

Hi Steve, I cannot figure out what you are describing. The Task bar (which contains the Start button) doesn't have a "Never Show" option. Which icons are you trying to change? The System Tray doesn't have any options like that either. If you right click on the Taskbar and select Properties, then the Taskbar tab, you can check "Hide inactive icons" and then click the Customize button. From there you can click on icons and choose to Always hide, Always show, or Hide when inactive. -- Terry R. ***Reply Note*** Anti-spam measures are included in my email address. Guest Steve L. Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Re: Task bar properties notification area Perhaps I didn't express it well. The bottom half of the Task Bar properties window is called the Notification Area. I can't customize it anymore. When I click customize I gat the Current and Past items an behaiors as always. But when I click on an item, any item, it turns blue as it always did and then shows the down carrot as it always did. But when I click the down carrot I don't get thew drop down where I can select Never Show, Always Show, etc. I get nothing. Nothing happens except that the blue goes away. You might try opening the property window for the taskbar and turn off "Hide inactive icons", apply it, close the window and reboot. When you restart, do the same but this time turn on "Hide inactive icons". Guest Steve L. Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Re: Task bar properties notification area Thanks. It didn't work. Another contributor suggested changing desktop themes (after saving my current theme). In the new theme everything worked and my settings were retained after I changed back to my original theme (important to me). However, in my original theme I again could not change notification area settings. Not a big problem (though I'm curious) since if I want changes I can just go back to another theme, change the settings, then go back to my original. Guest Rey Santos Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 RE: Task bar properties notification area If you have TweakUI http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx click on Taskbar and Start Menu on the left pane then uncheck the box "Show taskbar notification icons" on the right then click Apply and OK. You have to reboot. You can also hide the clock on the Taskbar properties. -- Rey "Steve L." wrote: > I can no longer customize the icons. Guest ju.c Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Re: Task bar properties notification area (Copied from 'microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize') You hit it right on. I had changed my Title Bar size such that both the time and the day of week showed. Reducing it so only the times shows corrects the Icon notification problem. Thank you again.
